DATA600 DATA ANALYSIS USING R (GRADUATE, 2 CREDIT HOURS)

This course serves as the introduction to the Data Analytics master’s program. Its purpose is to introduce to students R and R Studio as a data analytic platform. Students will learn the basics of R by using it to review and learn basic statistical analyses.

Prerequisite: Admission to degree and/or certificate programs or permission from the program director.

DATA604 PYTHON PROGRAMMING AND DATA MANAGEMENT (GRADUATE, 2 CREDIT HOURS)

This online course is an introduction to analytical programming in Python and Data Management using SQL. The course presents foundational material required for the Data Analytics core courses to ensure students are ready for that material. Some of the course material will be similar to that offered in a computer science course but will focus on the skills most often required by analysts rather than programming and database specialists.

Prerequisite: Admission to degree and/or certificate programs or permission from the program director.

DATA610 INTRODUCTION TO DATA MINING (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This course provides an experiential introduction to current issues and methods in data mining, applications of some introductory data mining algorithms. A leading statistical and data mining software package, R will be used to apply techniques learned in the class to some modern and classic data sets. Topics include algorithms for supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques.

Prerequisites: DATA600 Data Analysis using R; DATA604 Python Programming and Data Management.

DATA612 VISUALIZATION, STORYTELLING AND ETHICS (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

The ability to communicate the results of data analyses is as important as the analyses themselves. This course will introduce topics important to data storytelling, to allow students to become better data presenters and critical viewers of data. Various visualization tools will be presented, and students will learn how best to report data to various types of audiences. Students will gain experience producing interactive, automatically updating data “dashboards.” Students will collaborate to produce collective visual stories, and provide critical reviews of each other’s work. Relevant areas of data ethics will also be introduced, including the protection of customer or patient privacy and the importance of conveying the uncertainty of results.

DATA614 ADVANCED ANALYTICS, PREDICTIVE MODELING, AND DECISION MAKING (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

Machine learning is taking over everything from biotech to psychology to business. In this class, you will learn a wide variety of machine learning models that are used in industry. These modeling methods are not only useful by themselves, but can also be used collectively to form neural networks. The models taught will include generalized linear models, logistic regression, time series models, optimization models and neural networks. Industry standard open source languages such as R and Python will be used throughout the course.

Prerequisites: DATA610 Introduction to Data Mining.

DATA616 DATA ENGINEERING, CURATION, AND ANALYTICS (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This course provides an experiential overview of current issues in data analytics from both analytic and computer sciences perspectives. The focus is on learning techniques for 1) scraping, cleaning, and manipulation of raw data from a variety of live sources and preparing them for analysis, 2) learning to manipulate and reorganize data to apply a variety of analytic tools, and 3) manipulate a variety of data features to enhance to predictive power of statistical models. The focus of this course will be primarily on techniques and tools used to extract data from various sources (primarily live and active data streams), prepare it for analysis, and then apply those analyses with a special emphasis on the understanding of feature engineering: the process of creating representations of data that increase the effectiveness of a predictive model.

Prerequisites: DATA600 Data Analysis using R, DATA604 Python Programming and Data Management; DATA610 Introduction to Data Mining Core courses.

DATA618 TEXT AND IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This course will utilize Python to develop text and image processing techniques. Students will leverage industry standard methodologies for text and image processing. Students will gain experience with feature extraction and classification techniques in both visual and textual domains using neural networks and traditional machine learning models. This is a 3-credit hour project-based course.

DATA640 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS ANALYTICS (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This course covers how organizations can use analytics to gather and utilize information to evaluate risk, increase profitability, and generally improve business performance. The material emphasizes data-driven managerial decision making in a structured approach to problem solving. Topics include an introduction to big data, viewing data and analytics capabilities as strategic assets, and employing analytical models to solve problems.

Prerequisite: DATA600, DATA610

DATA642 MARKETING ANALYTICS (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This course reviews the statistical processes and analytical tools marketing managers may need and could employ in order to make decisions regarding marketing functions such as segmentation, targeting, positioning, among other functions. Further, this course reviews the best analytical processes marketing managers may use to evaluate customer lifetime values, customer buying behaviors, international market analyses, and digital marketing effectiveness. The statistical analyses covered include, but are not limited to cluster analyses, descriptive analyses, analyses of variance, regressions, structural equation modeling, and multilevel analyses.

DATA644 DATA ANALYTICS FOR ACCOUNTING (GRADUATE, 3 CREDIT HOURS)

This class covers the analysis of data related to accounting professionals. The focuses include analytic techniques for decision making and the examination of “big data” involving accounting information. Data analytics has become a relevant skill for all business managers and particularly accountants who often know both internal and external data better than anyone inside the organization.

DATA648 SUPPLY CHAIN ANALYTICS (GRADUATE, 4 CREDIT HOURS)

As the last course in the program, students will have the opportunity to leverage the learning from all core classes and apply their skills in a real-world project. Supply chains are dynamic and complex environments that involve making decisions on different levels and demand the use of real data for real business problems. A set of different analytics tools will be used to collect, organize, and analyze data that support key supply chain decisions, as well as the different challenges and opportunities they pose.

The Office of Financial Aid awards Federal Direct Loans to degree-seeking graduate students enrolled at least half-time (three credit hours). There is no gift assistance for graduate students awarded through the Office of Financial Aid. Federal Direct PLUS Loans for graduate students and private loans are available to those needing additional assistance.

STEPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS BORROWING LOANS

STEP 1: COMPLETE THE FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

• Find the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) here
• For the fall and/or spring semesters, submit the FAFSA for the academic year (i.e. Fall 2021 and/or Spring 2022 use the 2021-2022 FAFSA).
• For the summer term, submit the FAFSA for the academic year preceding summer (i.e. Summer 2021 uses the 2020-2021 FAFSA).

STEP 2: REGULARLY CHECK YOUR BUTLER UNIVERSITY EMAIL

Students will receive an email when the financial aid notification is available to view on My.Butler.

STEP 3: REVIEW/ACCEPT YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARDS

Carefully review your offer of financial aid and accept or decline the awards online at my.butler.edu using your username and password provided by the Office of Admission to log in.

• Navigate to my.butler.edu and click Student Financial Planning under Academic Tools.
• Select Home in the navigation bar at the top.
• Click on Review/Accept Awards.
• Follow all steps to review and accept or decline your financial aid awards.

STEP 4: ACT ON YOUR FEDERAL LOANS

If you accepted the Federal Direct Loan, navigate to the Student Financial Planning home page.

• Under Receive Your Funds, select both Complete Subsidized/Unsubsidized Entrance Counseling and Sign your Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized MPN.
• You will be directed to complete both at studentaid.gov. You will log in using your FSA ID from the FAFSA.
• All borrowers will also be required to complete the Annual Student Loan Acknowledgement (counseling) at studentaid.gov.

STEP 5: EVALUATE YOUR OPTIONS TO PAY THE BILL

The Office of Student Accounts publishes the electronic billing statements monthly as charges occur. More information about the tuition and fees, the billing process, payment plans, and additional Student Account Services can be found on the Student Accounts page.

FEDERAL DIRECT LOAN

The Federal Direct Loan is a long-term, low-interest unsubsidized student loan. Degree-seeking graduate students enrolled at least half-time (three credit hours) may be eligible to borrow up to $20,500 annually.

• Students are required to file the FAFSA.
• Repayment begins six months after graduating, leaving the University or enrolling less than half-time.
• The fixed interest rate for the Federal Direct Graduate/Professional Unsubsidized Loan adjusts each year on July 1. Refer to studentaid.gov for updates.
• The origination fee for the Federal Direct Graduate/Professional Unsubsidized Loan is 1.057 percent.
• The origination fee for the Federal Direct Graduate/Professional Unsubsidized Loan adjusts each year on October 1. Refer to studentaid.gov for updates.

FEDERAL DIRECT PLUS LOAN FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS (GRADPLUS)

Federal Direct PLUS Loan for graduate students is available to creditworthy students pursuing a graduate degree. Grad PLUS Loans may cover educational expenses up to the cost of attendance minus all other financial assistance. Interest is charged during all periods, and the lender is the U.S. Department of Education.

• Repayment begins 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed. Deferment options are available while the student is in school.
• The fixed interest rate adjusts each year on July 1. Refer to studentaid.gov for updates.
• The origination fee adjusts each year on October 1. Refer to studentaid.gov for updates.
• Students must complete the FAFSA and apply for the PLUS Loan at studentaid.gov.
• The Office of Financial Aid will process a PLUS Loan upon notification of credit approval.
• The Master Promissory Note (MPN) must be signed prior to funds being credited to the student’s account.
• All borrowers will also be required to complete the Annual Student Loan Acknowledgement (counseling) at studentaid.gov.
• Students must be enrolled in a minimum of three credit hours to be eligible for the loan.

PRIVATE LOANS

Graduate students may consider private loan options after exhausting opportunities from federal aid programs. See the private loans section on our Financing Options webpage for more information about the available loan programs. For graduate certificate programs that are not federal aid eligible, students may be able to use private loans. Some private loan lenders, like Sallie Mae and PNC, allow borrowing for graduate certificates.
