Publications

Butler’s MFA Creative Writing program is host to an online and print literary magazine, Booth. After only three years, Booth had already been praised as “one of the most exciting, fresh, and irreverent new journals out there” (Aja Gabel). Contributors include Kim Addonizio, Robin Black, Jonathan Lethem, and Michael Martone, and Booth has published interviews with writers such as Colson Whitehead, Joyce Carol Oates, Yusef Komunyakaa, Jonathan Franzen, George Saunders, Eula Biss, and Charles Simic. Boothoffers opportunities for MFAs to help curate and edit content and to interview visiting writers for potential publication. We also offer MFA students a course in literary publishing, as well as multiple internship opportunities related to all publishing projects.

Curriculum

Curriculum

Each student is required to complete 36 hours of coursework and a successful thesis for the degree. This equates to 12 three-hour courses. With flexible pacing and a variety of electives, students can take the time they need and tailor the program to fit their needs.

Students should plan to take all coursework in person on our Indianapolis campus and should plan to reside nearby for at least two years. Thesis work may be completed remotely, with permission.

Writers-in-Residence

MFA Writers-in-Residence

Every year, the MFA-Creative Writing program hosts several writers for extended visits; these writers meet with the MFA students in social settings, lead classroom discussions, read manuscripts, and provide mentoring and inspiration throughout their stays. These writers can stay from three days to three weeks. Recently, writers-in-residence have included Percival Everett, Madeline Miller, Sharon Olds, André Aciman, and Danez Smith.
