Bridget McGrath ’14—a Champion for Butler

Bridget McGrathAs a recent graduate of the Butler University PA Program, Bridget McGrath sees no reason to wait for a convenient time to give back to the University and the program she cherishes.  McGrath’s desire to be active started her first year at Butler, when she became a member of the executive board of the Butler University Student Foundation (BUSF), a student organization that works closely with the Butler Alumni Board. The early exposure to Butler alumni, as a student, modeled for McGrath the positive difference active alumni can make in students’ lives. Her experience in BUSF led her to her current term on Butler’s Young Alumni Board.

While McGrath gives of her time generously at the University level, she also feels passionately about giving back to the PA Program. McGrath was a preceptor for the last two years at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana where she was a member of the hospitalist team. Her position allowed her to offer a variety of experiences to the Butler PA students. In the same hour, she and the students could attend a high-risk delivery then move on to a hospice consult.  McGrath credits her positive experience during her clinical year for providing the motivation to become a preceptor early in her career. McGrath shares that “precepting reminds you of why you got into medicine in the first place, and brings you back in touch with excellence.”

McGrath has also enthusiastically participated in the PA Program’s Non-Academic Evaluations (NAE) interviews, which evaluate candidates applying to the PA Program. She feels that Butler’s strength is the personal touch, and her involvement in NAE allows her to both give encouragement to nervous candidates and give feedback to the admission committee because, as she says, “My degree is only as good as the caliber of students who continue to graduate from the Program.”

McGrath will now carry on her involvement with Butler University Alumni and the PA Program in Chicago. She has recently accepted a position with the hospitalist team at the University of Chicago where she plans to continue to precept Butler PA Students.
