Preceptor Profile: Jason Kolkmeier
Jason Kolkmeier ’04 is a PA with a dynamic personal and professional life. He is a husband of 11 years; father to three children ages 7, 5, and nine months; actively involved in his church community; and an avid long-distance runner. Professionally, Kolkmeier supports the Butler PA Program, serving as a preceptor in family medicine at Major Health Partners in Shelbyville, Indiana. He has taken an active role in IAPA working with others to further PA legislation and most recently served as IAPA President (2016–2017).
The Butler PA students who are fortunate enough to be placed in his care realize they benefit not only in building upon their clinical knowledge and skills, but also by being witness to his high-quality, patient-centered care. Kolkmeier says that his favorite part of precepting is “getting to know the students, seeing them grow, and helping them put all the pieces together. I enjoy teaching them about the PA profession and showing them how PAs practice. Oftentimes, I have students who tell me that they will only have two PA preceptors during their 11 rotations. While having physician preceptors is okay, these students are the future and we as PAs need to be leaders to create excellence in our field.”
When asked how he might advise someone who has put off serving as a preceptor due to all of life’s demands on their time, Kolkmeier remarked that he understands that sentiment but feels it is our duty as PAs to give back to our profession and model how a PA contributes to the delivery of healthcare.
We thank Kolkmeier for his contribution to the Butler PA Program and offer our continued best wishes to him and his family.
