Matt Michel ’16
He’s not on the roster, but you’ll see Matt Michel ’16 under the goal at every Butler basketball game this season.
You’ll see Michel’s talent and love for the game in the videos he shoots, edits, and produces for Butler Athletics. In fact, Butler basketball was the first thing that grabbed his attention in high school.
“Butler making it to the Final Four was definitely the only reason Butler was even on my radar, so I have to give them credit,” he said. “I had no idea that would end up being such a central aspect of my four years here.”
Growing up, the Minneapolis native taught himself video editing and production skills. During his college search, he knew he was looking for a school where he could utilize those talents, build on them and learn to create content he was passionate about—especially sports.
“I knew I was interested in going to a school that had good athletics, and had a team atmosphere that brought students, faculty, and the Indianapolis community together,” he said.
He found just that at Butler. And during his four years here, the Digital Media Production major has been able to polish his self-taught skills with opportunities both in the classroom and on the sidelines.
“The opportunities outside of the classroom are the thing I really took advantage of,” he said. “Getting involved at Hinkle Fieldhouse and athletics and a lot of the video production that goes on there really allowed me to get actual work experience.”
Michel currently works games at Hinkle Fieldhouse, running playback in the control room. In 2014, he helped found Butler’s first student-run sports website, BU:30. Michel has also created viral hype videos and interviewed countless athletes.
“As I graduate I will have two to three years of on-the-job experience,” he said. “People in the business are looking for students to have done these things before and to know what they’re talking about.”
