Student return to campus plan
Butler’s plans for an on-campus, residential experience

Before Coming to Campus

Back to Butler Screening Requirement

Students and families should limit exposure (e.g., large gatherings, travel to areas with a high number of COVID-19 cases, etc.) and adhere to social distancing and face masks in public for two weeks before coming to campus, to help create a strong and healthy opening to the school year.

All students will be required to complete a one-time Back to Butler Health Screening 72 hours prior to their move-in or first day on campus to obtain clearance to return to campus. Students will receive an immediate on-screen notification and an email indicating clearance. Students must present a screenshot, email, or print-out of clearance during move-in.

ALL STUDENTS are required to be tested on campus for COVID-19 prior to moving into on-campus housing. ALL non-residential students, including those residing in Greek housing, will be required to be tested before their first class. Butler University is covering the cost of the COVID-19 tests.

Residential Students: Please see the Move-In and Orientation section of the Plan for further information.

Non-Residential Students, including those residing in Greek housing: If you will be on campus for any reason in spring 2020, you need to be tested on-site for COVID-19 and must obtain a test prior to arriving on campus or attending classes. On-campus testing will take place in Hinkle Fieldhouse within the Efroymson Gym.

Please note that students who are in fully online programs, and will not be coming to campus at all during the spring semester, do not need to complete the on-campus COVID test at this time.

All undergraduate students will need to schedule an appointment for testing by logging in to the Residence Life Portal and clicking on the Spring 2021 COVID-19 Testing link in the top bar of the page. The portal is now open, and will remain open until all appointment times are filled. As wait times on the walk-in day will be longer, we strongly recommend that undergraduate students make an appointment on the testing days prior to January 24.

For all graduate students, as well as undergraduate students who do not schedule an appointment to be tested, walk-in appointments will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on Sunday, January 24, from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.

Your test results will be available approximately 90 minutes after you take your test. You can access your test results by logging on to your Butler Health Portal and clicking on “View My Lab Results.”

Important Notes:
  • All students will need to complete their Back To Butler Health Screen and be prepared to show this confirmation during check-in.
  • Previous, external tests will not be accepted.
  • Students that have tested positive for COVID-19 at any point will be required to be re-tested.
  • If you have been previously diagnosed with COVID-19, please bring documentation of your first positive diagnosis.
  • If you are taking fully online courses and will not be on campus at any time, you are not required to be tested.
  • If you have already been tested on-site as a result of moving into on campus housing, you do not need to schedule a time to be retested.

Each student will receive a health kit with a thermometer and mask when they arrive on campus. Returning students will pick up a new version of their Student ID card and their student health and safety kit which will include mask, thermometer, and lanyard at Parking Services.
