Music Student Profiles
Meet Natalie Farrell. Music & Liberal Arts.
"The Butler University School of Music taught me the meaning of the word “interdisciplinary.” The faculty have encouraged me to pursue my interests in the academic side of music with the “emphases” options while also following my passions for English and foreign languages due to its well-rounded Liberal Arts context. Butler has given me the opportunity to explore the infinite ways that my many interests can combine as I continue with my education."
Meet Sam Turley. Music & Double Majors.
"My connections through the Butler University School of Music have given me unforgettable opportunities to perform both on campus and in the Indianapolis community, collaborate with colleagues and friends, serve as a teaching fellow in the Butler Community Arts School, and further hone my skills as a jazz saxophonist, all while pursuing an entirely different major in mathematics. I have received a tremendously well-rounded and thorough education, and the School of Music has been nothing but supportive and encouraging throughout the challenges I have faced during such a rigorous tenure. I am very grateful for my Butler education and I feel excited and prepared for the possibilities awaiting me after my time at the School of Music."
Meet Marty Meyer. Music & Double Majors.
"Butler University is an excellent school for serious musicians who have academic interests outside of the arts. With a double major in Music and Actuarial Science, I am very grateful to attend a university where the faculty of the School of Music and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences encourage me to pursue both majors. I am a passionate cellist, and I have found that I can practice several hours per day while maintaining success in all of my courses."
Meet Erin Wells. Music & Double Majors.
"At Butler University I'm able to explore my two greatest passions-elementary education and bassoon. The variety in classes offered through both of my majors (music and education) has made me a more well-rounded student and prepared me for great success after Butler."
Meet John Albert Harris. Music & Creativity.
"The Butler University School of Music nurtures my creativity as a composer and pianist. I'm a composition major, and at Butler I've written a film score, a song cycle, and a large work for chamber orchestra. The faculty has helped me create my own musical voice and given me many performance opportunities."
Meet David Platt. Music & Creativity.
"Empowering is a perfect word to describe Butler University School of Music. The advisors and faculty in the music school truly empower students to pursue their dreams successfully. As a freshman, I couldn't decide whether to focus on as my degree - violin performance, music education, music theory, music history, or composition - so I did it all! With the help of my advisor and the "emphasis" opportunities, the music school enabled me to essentially 'major' in all of these fields while still maintaining a high level of success. Butler also enables students to study fields outside of the music school because of its strong, cross-curricular Liberal Arts approach. I could study everything I wanted to at Butler University."
Meet Brandon Douthitt. Music & Double Majors.
"My career goal is to be a professional jazz saxophonist. The music faculty at Butler has been instrumental in helping me develop my craft, while the curriculum has given me the flexibility to pursue a double major in recording industry studies. The individualized attention and guidance I've received at Butler has helped me achieve excellence in everything I do."
Meet Tim Jans. Music & Arts Administration.
"Having been involved with music since kindergarten, I knew that I needed a college that would allow me to further my musical abilities but also prepare me for work at an arts non-profit organization. The Arts Administration-Music program at Butler has allowed me to do just that. During my tenure here, I've performed with three School of Music ensembles and the all-male a cappella group "Out of the Dawg House," and still had time for three internships related to the arts management field. I feel very prepared for my career after attending Butler."
