They\u2019re relying on you. There were a few instances early in my professional career where my not knowing cost my client money. I never wanted to make another mistake because I lacked knowledge. I always want to know what\u2019s the latest and greatest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s currently the National Learning and Development Manager at the Marsh McLennan Agency, a promotion she received a few months after graduating from Butler in December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many in her field, Richardson stumbled into the commercial insurance industry fresh out of college. She quickly fell in love with her chosen field, partly because of the value her services provide to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have to go through the same steps as a doctor or lawyer, but we uphold similar standards,\u201d Richardson said. &#8220;Our clients often come to us and don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re doing, so they put 100 percent of their trust in us to ensure their business or personal lives are protected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, she contemplated pursuing a graduate-level degree in business and was even accepted into an MBA program when she discovered Butler\u2019s MSRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are not a lot of schools that have programs at the graduate level for insurance. They are very limited,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cI thought I would get an MBA, but then I thought, &#8216;wouldn&#8217;t it be cool if I could actually get a degree in insurance because that\u2019s the industry I\u2019m in and want to teach?\u2019 That&#8217;s what I know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her current role, she\u2019s in charge of educating colleagues through the Marsh McLennan Agency on various topics under the umbrella of business insurance, which includes managing risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richardson vets instructional resources, writes courses, and performs many other responsibilities. She is also a faculty member for the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research, where she gets to teach other insurance professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of both roles, she must cater her messages to how different people absorb information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the Butler program, you\u2019re working with professors and dealing with professionals,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cI enjoyed observing the way that they taught. Everyone\u2019s got a different learning style. I gleaned from the different methods they used to ensure we retained the information. It\u2019s been useful at work to figure out how else we can pivot and broaden our approach to reach everyone who learns in different styles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though her classes were virtual, Richardson developed relationships with several like-minded individuals in her cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am a self-proclaimed insurance nerd,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cThat term is becoming more and more popular as people seek out degrees and specializations in insurance. I eat, sleep, and drink insurance. Butler presented an opportunity to be amongst my kind. So, when he discovered Butler\u2019s Master of Science in Risk and Insurance (MSRI) program in 2020, he saw the opportunity as too good to pass up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cButler has a well-earned reputation in the insurance community,\u201d Logan said, \u201cso I jumped at the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a personal level, Logan felt drawn to Butler. He grew up in the area and remembers field trips to Hinkle Fieldhouse, but the reason he picked Butler for his MSRI went well beyond his fondness for Bulldog athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt a practical level, the MSRI program was completely virtual and synchronous. I could learn from anywhere without disrupting my family or career,\u201d Logan said. \u201cI was also attracted to going through the program with a cohort of other professionals. The built-in peer group allowed us to learn together and push one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2014coupled with the depth of everything that Butler offers and the overall value of their graduate-level education\u2014made the program an easy choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amerisure promoted Logan to Risk Management Expertise Specialist in the spring of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his role, he visits clients and connects with them in person to assess their true risk and counsel them on best practices. He also trains their employees and members of the management team. Now, in a lead role, Logan works with a team of other specialized risk management consultants at Amerisure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy focus is on property risk\u2014a business&#8217;s physical assets, risks that can impact business continuity and income,\u201d he said. \u201cMy ability to understand the bigger picture has placed me into a lead role opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his career, Logan has achieved several designations and certifications that have \u2018undoubtedly\u2019 benefited him, but his time at Butler took his skillset to a new level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my mind, returning to academics and obtaining a Master&#8217;s in Risk and Insurance really tied my knowledge base together,\u201d Logan said. \u201cIt opened doors and further sharpened my knowledge and abilities. I also completed coursework as part of the degree that counted towards earning the CRM, CPCU, and ACI designations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, he\u2019s also an adjunct professor with the Lacy School of Business, teaching a course in the MSRI program on Risk Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Logan is well aware of the talent shortage facing the industry, and he believes there are more opportunities than ever for risk management professionals to advance their careers, especially for those who\u2019ve taken the initiative to pursue an advanced degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel blessed to be in a position to give back with my time and energy,\u201d Logan said, \u201cto both an industry and institution that are just so important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teaching is one of the ways he gives back. In Logan\u2019s mind, there\u2019s no greater gift he could offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love to learn. In 2015, she accepted a new challenge and became the company\u2019s Global Risk and Insurance Manager with a mentor to learn from or industry-specific experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy predecessor had already retired,\u201d Blair said. \u201cI showed up for the job after maternity leave and realized, \u2018I have no idea what I&#8217;m doing, he\u2019s gone and all I have left are his files.\u2019 So, I leaned on our broker and external networks to learn what a risk manager\u2019s role entails. That was a big learning curve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through determination, she became successful in her new role, but a few years later, she still longed for foundational industry knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Blair came across Butler\u2019s Master of Science in Risk and Insurance (MSRI) and saw the program as a perfect fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like I was missing the fundamentals of the role: contract negotiations, renewal strategies, and basic accounting,\u201d Blair said. \u201cWhen I saw the Butler program, I thought, \u2018this is exactly what I need.\u2019 It&#8217;s a comprehensive course of everything you could touch as a risk manager and a crash course in insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She already held an MBA when she enrolled at Butler, so she saw the MRSI program as much more than an opportunity to check a box on her resume by earning an advanced degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Butler program fit my life at the time and benefited my career as a risk professional,\u201d Blair said. \u201cIt\u2019s an important part of my story, too. There are opportunities out there. It\u2019s never too late to go back to school and learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For one, she picked up hands-on experience and gained insights directly applicable to her work at Bose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe capstone project was exciting because we explored new ideas to put into the Butler Captive,\u201d Blair said. \u201cIt gave me a new perspective, and I could take the creative and untraditional practices I learned and apply them to our Captive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Butler, Blair participated in a cohort of other students from various backgrounds. Some had recently finished their undergraduate degrees, while others entered after spending decades in risk management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was great to build and develop new relationships,\u201d Blair said. \u201cThe program and the professors were all wonderful and leaned on us students to help share our experiences and apply them to the foundations we were learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blair is an active speaker at country risk management conferences, especially before the COVID-19 pandemic. She\u2019s also a member of the Massachusetts Risk and Insurance Management Society and the World Broker Advisory Council, so she\u2019s always had strong networking skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the new connections she made in Butler\u2019s MSRI program proved invaluable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo risk manager&#8217;s job is the same, so it\u2019s interesting to discuss work with fellow cohort members,\u201d Blair said. \u201c\u2018What are you doing? Should I be doing that differently?\u2019 We took those relationships to a new level because you can pose questions I wouldn\u2019t ask my carriers. Once he realized that risk management was the area he wanted to specialize in, he has continued to look for ways to learn and grow his passion. Upon completing his MBA, when he was looking for masters-level programs that would challenge him as a risk professional, Will was drawn to Butler\u2019s Master of Science in Risk and Insurance (MSRI) because \u201cthe MSRI program was highly recommended by many well-respected peers in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lehman earned his Master of Science in Risk and Insurance from Butler in 2020 and has poured his knowledge and passion for his career into his roles at Cook Group Incorporated, where he has spent the majority of his 10-year career. He holds numerous industry certifications, such as the Certified Risk Manager, Associate in Risk Management, and Chartered Property &amp; Casualty Underwriter. Further, Will has received global awards in recognition of his industry expertise (Indiana State University\/Rising Star Award, Risk and Insurance Management Society\/Rising Star Award, Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce\/10 under 40 award, Insurance Star Executives 35 under 35 award). Currently, he serves the industry as a leader on the RIMS Board of Directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within a couple of years of graduating from Butler\u2019s MSRI program, Will was promoted from Risk Manager to Global Director of Risk Management at Cook Group Incorporated, a global, privately held, and family-owned organization with businesses in the medical device, life science, real estate, hospitality, and service industries. As Global Director, he leads a team which oversees all risk financing, claim management, corporate risk management, business continuity, and vehicle management activities worldwide for the Bloomington-based company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about what he gained from his Butler experience in the MSRI program, he shares that \u201cboth the educational coursework and relationships have provided numerous real-world takeaways that have helped me add value to my organization as a risk professional. I met so many successful and driven industry professionals that have had a profound impact on my knowledge today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lehman hopes to see the Risk and Insurance profession continue to grow. He notes that even in the past decade, most risk management departments have evolved into true strategic partners within organizations. As someone who embraces progress, he is eager to see how the rapidly changing technological environment promotes efficiency in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will Lehman has proven his drive to learn and passion for the industry in every aspect of his education and career.
