Each department establishes the minimum attendance expectations for its students; see below for details. Double majors within JCA are required to attend the total number of arts events required for their primary major, plus attend one-half the number of arts events required for their secondary major. Attendance records are maintained in the JCA office;&nbsp;the tracking process is outlined below. See Janice Thornburgh in the JCA main office if you have any questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-arts-event-attendance-tracking-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arts event attendance tracking process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As a student with a JCA major or minor (music only), you will see a course in Canvas called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/butler.instructure.com\/courses\/19842\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JCA Arts Event Attendance<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the \u201cAssignments\u201d button in the course menu to access the tracking area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start your first entry by selecting \u201cArts Event Attendance 01.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the information requested and select \u201csubmit.\u201d This will instantly give you credit for attending the event, but these are double-checked by JCA staff to ensure your attendance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As you attend events, continue to work your way through the assignments. It will show you assignments you have already completed so you can easily tell which the next assignment number is to enter information into. (For example, if your last event entered was for \u201cArts Event Attendance 21,\u201d then you enter your next one in \u201cArts Event Attendance 22.\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will also notice an assignment titled \u201cAttendance Adjustments.\u201d For students who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors, this area contains the number of events you have attended in your previous years at Butler.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Because of their required attendance at arts events, JCA majors fulfill the Butler Community Requirement (BCR) of the University Core Curriculum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All JCA student, faculty, and guest recitals\/productions\/exhibitions\/lectures, along with all Clowes Memorial Hall arts events, will satisfy attendance requirements. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outside events are limited to those that are closely related in nature to on-campus productions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attendance at repeat performances of the same program will not count.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generally, students will not receive credit for performances or exhibitions in which they participate; see the exception below under \u201cMusic Majors\u201d and \u201cMusic Minors.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-art-majors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Art Majors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Art&nbsp;majors are required to attend six&nbsp;exhibition receptions, gallery tours, or guest artist lectures each year.&nbsp;These include on-campus opening art exhibition receptions at The Annex, as well as off-campus visits to the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, the Eiteljorg Museum, Gallery 924, and the Harrison Center for the Arts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over the course of four years, students are required to attend two arts events each in dance, music, and theatre.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are no arts event attendance requirements for Art minors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-arts-administration-general-arts-administration-art-arts-administration-art-history-arts-administration-music-and-arts-administration-theatre\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arts Administration-General, Arts Administration-Art, Arts Administration-Art History, Arts Administration-Music, and Arts Administration-Theatre<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students majoring in Arts Administration with the following concentrations: General, Art, Art History, and Music are required to attend 12 arts events&nbsp;each year. Arts event credits should include all JCA disciplines each year. Students may receive credit for one high school, one community theatre, and&nbsp;one \u201cpop\u201d event (such as a Taylor Swift concert) each year. If you are unsure whether or not an event counts, ask the Department Chair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who miss required Department of Arts Administration events (e.g., welcome back dinner, end-of-year celebration, and JCA Signature Series Arts Admin Speaker) will have two arts event attendance credits added to their total requirements for each missed event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students participating in a full-time internship or study abroad program during the academic year&nbsp;are required to attend six arts events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arts Administration-Theatre majors are required to follow the Department of Theatre arts event attendance requirements (see below).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dance-Arts Administration majors are required to follow the Department of Dance arts event attendance requirements (see below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-dance-majors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dance Majors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dance majors are required to attend a total of 30 arts events in order to graduate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These events must include a range of arts experiences: theatre productions, music performances, art exhibits, museum visits, arts-related lectures, and dance performances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dance majors will not receive credit for performances in which they participate as performer, choreographer, or&nbsp;technical crew.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are no arts event attendance requirements for Dance minors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-music-majors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Music Majors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Music majors are required to attend 16 arts events each year; for students who are student teaching, studying abroad, or in full-time internships during the academic year, only eight arts events will be required for that year. Arts-related lecture events will also count.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Annual distribution will be eight in music, one in theatre, one in dance, one in visual art, and five of the student\u2019s choice (from any of the previous categories). If student teaching, studying abroad, or in a full-time internship, the distribution for that year is four in music, one in theatre, one in dance, one in visual art, and one of the student\u2019s choice (from any of the previous categories).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music students may receive credit for performances in which they participate. However, when there is more than one performance of any given event (e.g., Rejoice!), it may only count for one credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-music-minors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Music Minors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Music and Jazz Studies minors must attend a minimum of 16 arts events during their matriculation at Butler, regardless of the number of semesters of enrollment as an official Music or Jazz Studies minor. Theatre majors are also required to attend designated professional theatre productions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over the course of four years, students are required to attend two arts events in outside disciplines, specifically,&nbsp;two events each in art, dance, and music. Do not block open doors to allow access for others. Department office hours are generally Monday\u2013Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM; faculty office hours are posted outside of their door. Note that during the summer, building hours shift to 8:00 AM\u20136:00 PM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-dance-studios-theatre-spaces\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dance studios\/theatre spaces<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use of dance studios is restricted to dance majors, and use of theatre space is restricted to theatre students.\u00a0Please see the appropriate department admin for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-emergency\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emergency<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are on campus and need emergency assistance, call the Butler University Police\u00a0Department (BUPD) directly at their emergency number, 317-940-9999, or 911 from your cell phone (which is transferred to them from a 911 call center).\u00a0There are \u201cblue\u201d emergency phones located outside the west and east\u00a0sides of Lilly Hall, as well as in the practice room area on the second floor; these connect directly to the Butler University Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-illness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Illness<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the event of an illness or emergency, email the professors for those classes you will miss, or contact the JCA main office at 317-940-9231 or via email at <a href=\"mailto:jthornbu@butler.edu\">jthornbu@butler.edu<\/a> to leave a message.\u00a0Contacting the main office does NOT constitute an excused absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-instrument-rental\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instrument rental<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">University-owned instruments may be rented by meeting the Instrument Room Manager during the hours posted on the door of LH 198, the Instrument Room (known as \u201cThe Cage\u201d), located by the back door to Lilly Hall.\u00a0Written approval from a faculty member must be submitted for the rental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-lockers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lockers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Large instrument lockers may be checked out from the Instrument Room, LH 198 (known as &#8220;The Cage&#8221;), during posted hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hallway lockers may be checked out from the JCA Main Office (LH 138).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dance dressing room lockers may be checked out from the dance department in LH 050.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>JCA-issued locks MUST be used on all Lilly Hall lockers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The University is NOT responsible for personal instruments and\/or property stolen from lockers.&nbsp;<strong>You are strongly encouraged to privately insure your personal property.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-lost-and-found\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lost and found<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Items found in Lilly Hall should be turned in to the JCA Main Office.&nbsp;If you&#8217;re looking for a lost item, check with the JCA Main Office, the department offices, and with BUPD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-practice-room-keys\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practice room keys<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a piano major\u00a0and need a key\u00a0to the locked piano\u00a0rooms, see the School of Music admin in room LH 229.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-rehearsal-and-meeting-spaces-recitals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rehearsal and meeting spaces\/recitals<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lilly Hall classrooms may be scheduled for rehearsals through the University\u2019s scheduling system via\u00a0my.butler.edu; select the \u201cSchedule A Room\u201d tile, followed by \u201cCreate a Reservation\u201d from the menu on the left. Be sure to use the \u201cBook a JCA Event\u201d template.
