How to Apply to JCA

Application to the Jordan College of the Arts (JCA) of Butler University had 4 components:

  • A Butler University or Common academic application and all the general materials required for it (including application form, transcripts, standardized test scores, an essay or personal statement, etc. See the admission page for more details.)
  • A selection of supplemental questions required by the department in which you intend to enroll.  These will be accessed as a Checklist item on your Butler Student Portal.  The Student Portal becomes available once you have submitted an academic application for admission.  Instructions about how to access the Student Portal will be sent via email to the address you provide on your academic application. 
  • Department-specific requirements that will be uploaded to the Student Portal:
    • Art: 5-10 images of applicant’s art work or the URL to their online portfolio
    • Dance: 5" x 7" full-length photo - women in pink tights en pointe, first arabesque, men in fitted shirts and black tights, attitude derriere relevé
    • Music: letter of recommendation from private lessons teacher or school ensemble director  Note: piano students must submit a letter from their private teacher
    • Theatre:  head shot and theatre résumé
  • An audition, personal interview, or portfolio review

In order for your academic application to be considered complete and to receive a decision for academic admission to the university, your application and all additional materials, including Checklist items, must be submitted and your audition/interview date selected.

Art—Portfolio Review

All portfolio reviews completed by the last scheduled portfolio review date in February are considered for a Jordan College of the Arts Award.  If circumstances prevent participation in the required on-campus portfolio review, a live video portfolio review can be scheduled with department approval.

All interviews completed by the last scheduled interview date in February are considered for a Jordan College of the Arts Award.  If circumstances prevent participation in the required on-campus interview, a live video interview can be scheduled with department approval.

More about the Dance Audition Experience

There is a maximum enrollment of 35 prospective students per audition date.  All auditions competed by the last scheduled audition date are considered for a Jordan College of the Arts Award. All auditions must be on-campus or at one of the three regional audition locations: San Francisco, Los Angeles or Baltimore.  Electronic auditions are accepted if you live outside the 48 contiguous states.  If applying for this method of audition, complete this form.

Audition Requirements

All auditions completed by the last scheduled audition date are considered for a Jordan College of the Arts Award.  For best consideration, performing an on-campus audition is recommended.  If circumstances prevent participation in on-campus or regional audition/interview, a live video audition can be scheduled with department approval.

Theatre—Audition or Portfolio Review

For best consideration, attending the on-campus auditions and workshop is recommended.  If circumstances prevent participation in an on-campus or regional audition/interview process, a live video audition/interview can be scheulded with departmental approval.

Sequence of the JCA Admission Process

  • Submit your Butler Application or Common Application to the Office of Admission. This application is for admission to the university as a whole, and all students (regardless of their choice of major) should complete it by November 1 for best award opportunity. Be sure to include all the additional documentation requested in the application process.
  • Complete the supplemental question Checklist item appropriate for your major. Be sure to include any additional documentation requested by the department you're applying to: Dance- photo, Music - letter of recommendation, Theatre- headshot and résumé, and Art+ Design- 5-10 images of your work. (See our tips above for more details.) 
  • Register for an audition/interview day.  Note: Your audition, interview, or review of art work can only be granted after your completed application and checklist items have been received (however, you do not have to be academically admitted at this time).  If you apply late in the audition season, you may not get your preferred audition date, or any date. Auditions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited, so apply as early as possible. You'll receive an email confirmation once you have successfully registered for an audition/interview/portfolio review date. Please do not make travel plans until your date is confirmed.   • Attend your audition, interview, or portfolio review.  In addition to your audition, durng your visit you will tour the JCA facilities , meet JCA administration, faculty, and students, and have the option to attend a financial aid session and full-campus tour.
