Setting Your Home Page

If you would like to have a home page come up each time you launch your browser, instructions for setting the home page for the most common browsers are below.

Google Chrome

Firefox

Safari

Internet Explorer

Backing Up and Restoring Bookmarks

Before having work done on your computer or getting a new computer, Information Technology recommends that clients backup and restore web browser bookmarks. Follow the instructions below to insure that no bookmarks are lost. 

Google Chrome (PC or Mac)

Exporting:

  1. To export bookmarks, click the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of a Google Chrome window.
  2. Select the Bookmarks menu, then select Bookmark Manager.
  3. From the Bookmark Manager page, select Organize, then Export Bookmarks to HTML File.
  4. In the Save As window, choose your BUfiles folder (Mac) or H drive (PC ) (or cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox or external hard drive) from the left-hand pane, then click Save.  

Importing:

  1. To import bookmarks from the file previously exported, click the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of a Google Chrome window.
  2. Select the Bookmarks menu, then select Import Bookmarks and Settings.
  3. From the "From" dropdown, select Bookmarks HTML file, then click Choose File.
  4. In the Open window, select your BUfiles folder or H drive (or wherever you saved the file) from the left-hand pane, select the .html file you previously exported, then click Open.
  5. At the Success window, click Done.

Firefox (PC or Mac)

Exporting:

  1. To export bookmarks, click the Bookmarks button in the upper right-hand corner of a Firefox window and select Show All Bookmarks.
  2. From the Library window that appears, click Import and Backup, and then choose Export Bookmarks to HTML.
  3. In the Save As window,  choose your BUfiles folder (Mac) or H drive (PC ) (or cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox or external hard drive) from the left-hand pane, then click Save.  
  4. Close the Library window.

Importing:

  1. To import saved bookmarks, click the Bookmarks button in the upper right-hand corner of a Firefox window and select Show All Bookmarks.
  2. From the Library window that appears, click Import and Backup, and choose Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  3. In the Open window, select your BUfiles folder or H drive (or wherever you saved the file) from the left-hand pane, select the .html file you previously exported, then click Open.
  4. Close the Library window.  

Safari (Mac)

Exporting:

  1. To export bookmarks, from within a Safari window click the File menu, then select Export Bookmarks.
  2. Click the down-turned arrow next to Save As to expand the window, then choose your BUfiles folder (or cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox or external hard drive) from the left-hand pane, then click Save.

Importing:

  1. To import saved bookmarks, from within a Safari window click the File menu, select Import From, and then Bookmarks HTML file.
  2. In the Import Bookmarks window, select your BUfiles folder (or wherever you saved the file) from the left-hand pane, select the .html file you previously exported, then click Import.

Internet Explorer (PC)

Exporting:

  1. To export bookmarks, click the bookmarks icon (a star) in the upper right-hand corner of an Internet Explorer window.
  2. Click the down-turned arrow next to Add to favorites, and select Import and Export.
  3. Select Export to a file, then click Next.
  4. Check the box next to Favorites, then click Next.
  5. Select the top-level Favorites folder, then click Next.
  6. Select Browse, choose your H drive (or cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox or external hard drive), then click Save.
  7. Click Export, then click Finish.

Importing:

  1. To import saved bookmarks, click the bookmarks icon (a star) in the upper right-hand corner of an Internet Explorer window.
  2. Click the down-turned arrow next to Add to favorites, and select Import and Export.
  3. Select Import from a file, then click Next.
  4. Check the box next to Favorites, then click Next.
  5. Select Browse, select your H drive (or wherever you saved the file) from the left-hand pane, select the bookmark.htm file you previously exported, then click Open.
  6. Click Next, then click Import, then click Finish.
