Cable TV

Butler University, in partnership with Bright House Networks, provides students living in University housing with full Cable TV service consisting of approximately 70 channels.

Note: Your TV must have a QAM tuner in order to receive this service. Most TVs (Vizio, Samsung, Sony) since 2006 include this, but refer to your owner's manual or manufacturer website (i.e., Google it) to check your specific model if you aren't sure. Some inexpensive models don't include this type of tuner since it is not required in every television.

Steps to take when you arrive on campus:

  1. Check with your TV's manufacturer website to see if your model has a QAM tuner.  Some models require activation or do not have a QAM Tuner.
  2. Remove any cable boxes, VCRs, or other devices between the TV and the wall.
  3. Connect the TV directly to the wall outlet using a high-quality coaxial cable with a threaded connection.
  4. Make sure your connections at both ends of the cable are tight.
  5. Set your TV source input to Cable (some TV's require changing to Antenna then Cable).
  6. Run a full channel scan, commonly called Auto Program or Auto Tune, to find all the channels available to you.

I currently live in a Greek house and I would like to upgrade. How can I do this?

Additional channels and upgrades are not available with Butler's cable service. If you live in one of the Greek houses, you should contact a satellite provider such as Dish or DirecTV for information about any supplemental service options. If you need the address of your building, see this list of building addresses.

Note: Lambda Chi Alpha receives Bright House service, but the channel lineup does not match the list on this website at this time.

I live in a residence hall and would like to upgrade my service. How can I do this?

Premium channels and upgrades are not available.

Do I need any equipment?

No. You only need a coaxial cable and a TV with a built-in QAM tuner (most TVs since 2006 include these). If you aren't sure if your TV has a QAM tuner built in, refer to your owner's manual or manufacturer website to check your specific model. To connect service, just connect your TV to the coaxial outlet using a coaxial cable, make sure the TV input is set to cable, then run a full channel scan on your television to find the channels available to you.

What is a QAM tuner?

QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) is the format in which Butler's cable service is encoded and transmitted from Bright House. A QAM tuner is the cable equivalent of an ATSC tuner, which is used to receive over-the-air digital channels broadcast by local stations. Most TVs since 2006 include a QAM tuner built-in, but some inexpensive models don't include this type of tuner since it is not required in every television, so you should check your owner's manual or manufacturer's website to check your specific model.

Can I buy an external QAM tuner for my TV?

Yes, external digital converters containing QAM tuners are available for purchase. The Channel Master CM-7001 is one such option (not necessarily recommended or endorsed by IT).

What if I'm only getting a few channels?

Make sure your TV's source input is set to Cable instead of Antenna.

Why am I only getting half of the channels and not the lower local channels?

Make sure you are using a high-quality coaxial cable with a threaded connection, and double-check to make sure the connections at both ends are tight. This issue is typically a sign of a lower-quality coaxial cable or a cable without a threaded connection at the end.

How do I report problems with my digital cable?

Make sure you are using a high-quality coaxial cable with a threaded connection and that your connections are tight. If you aren't receiving any channels at all, verify whether your TV has a built-in QAM tuner (most TVs since 2006 include these). If you aren't sure if your TV has a QAM tuner built in, refer to your owner's manual or manufacturer website to check your specific model. If after checking your cable, connections, and confirming that your TV has a built-in QAM tuner you still have no cable TV signal, please call the IT Help Desk at (317) 940-4357.
