Financial Aid Notification & Next Steps

The Financial Aid Notification (FAN) is a complete overview of the financial aid offered to students eligible to receive financial aid based on merit or need. The FAN also includes an average cost of attendance, which is used to determine financial aid eligibility. Once review of the financial aid file is complete, students will be notified via their Butler email when the FAN is available to view online at my.butler.edu - (Self Service Student Homepage > Student Center > Finances > Financial Aid > Review/Accept/Decline Financial Aid). Paper notifications are also sent to new incoming students. The FAN is not a bill or a statement of the student's account.

Follow the steps below to ensure that all your aid will disburse to the student account in a timely manner.

Step 1 – Review/Accept/Decline Financial Aid

Carefully review your offer of financial aid and accept or decline the awards online using your username and password provided by the Office of Admission to log in.

  • Navigate to my.butler.edu > Self Service Student Homepage > Student Center > Finances > Financial Aid > Review/Accept/Decline Financial Aid.
  • Accept or decline each award offered.
  • Check and Accept Financial Aid Terms/Conditions.
  • Click Submit.
  • Click Yes to continue.

Review/Accept/Decline Your Financial Aid by May 1.

Step 2 – Act on Your Federal Direct Loans

Federal Direct Loan information is available here. If you declined your loans in Step 1 or have received Federal Student Loans at Butler in previous terms, please continue to Step 3. 

Complete Loan Agreement for a Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan (MPN):

  • Navigate to studentloans.gov.
  • Log in with student's FSA ID from the FAFSA.
  • Click on Complete Loan Agreement for a Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan (MPN).

Complete Entrance Counseling:

  • Navigate to studentloans.gov.
  • Log in with student's FSA ID from the FAFSA.
  • Click on Complete Entrance Counseling.

Complete the Loan Agreement (MPN) and Entrance Counseling by July 1.

 

Step 3 – Evaluate Options to Pay the Bill

The Office of Student Accounts publishes the electronic billing statements in July for the fall semester and December for the spring semester. Information about the billing process, payment plans, and additional Student Account Services is available here

Your Out-of-Pocket Cost has been calculated in your Financial Aid Notification. If you need additional assistance to cover educational expenses, Butler offers financing options to invest in your education. Step 4 – Report Any Outside Scholarships

According to federal regulations, scholarships received from any organization are considered a resource available to meet your financial aid eligibility. As a financial aid recipient, a student must report all outside scholarships from sources other than the federal, state, and University programs.

Report Outside Scholarships:

  • Navigate to my.butler.edu > Self Service Student Homepage > Student Center > Finances > Financial Aid > Report Other Financial Aid.
  • List any outside scholarship.
  • Read and accept the Financial Aid Terms and Conditions.
  • Click Submit.
  • Click Yes to continue.

Outside scholarships may also be reported by sending a copy of the scholarship letter to the Office of Financial Aid.

Report Any Outside Scholarships as received.
