Web Design and Development

Be a part of the future. Butler's Web Design and Development program immerses students in the design and development of web technologies that people use every day on computers, tablets, and mobile devices.

As a Web Design and Development major, you will:

  • Learn front-end and back-end development of interactive web-content.
  • Develop, test, and complete a variety of usable projects.
  • Design appealing visual elements.
  • Master HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and other programming languages.

A degree in Web Design and Development will prepare students to find employment in a variety of job markets. With the expansion of e-commerce, web design and development professionals are in high demand and students from this degree program will have a highly sought educational background in both design and development, putting them ahead of their competition.

Major in Web Design and Development

Students choosing Web Design and Development as their major will be required to fulfill 33 credit hours within the major. Required courses include:

  • CME 106, Survey of Digital Media Production (3)
  • CS 142, Introduction to Computer Science and Programming (3)
  • CME 208, Multimedia Graphics (3)
  • CME 219, Design for the World Wide Web (3)
  • MK 280, Principles of Marketing (3)
  • CME 306, Multimedia Design & Production (3)
  • CME 308, Interactive Design (3)
  • CME 419, Interactive Web Development (3)
  • CME 422, New Media Distribution (3)
  • CME 432, Law & Regulation of Electronic Media (3)
  • CME 457, Digital Media Production Design & Management (3)

In addition, students will be required to satisfy the Butler University Core curriculum as well as the CCOM requirements of Public Speaking, Media Literacy, Communication & Culture, and Foreign Language (6 hours at the 200 or above level).

A minor (recommended) or concentration is required, comprising 12-24 hours. A second major also fulfills this requirement.

Additional hours of free electives, combined with the above, to complete the 126 hours needed for graduation.

Minor in Web Design and Development

Students interested in a minor in Web Design and Development will take a total of 12 credit hours made up of the following required courses:

  • CS 142, Computer Science and Programming (3)
  • CME 208, Multimedia Graphics (3)
  • CME 219, Design for the Web (3)
  • CME 308, Interactive Design (3)

In addition, select courses totaling 9 credit hours (at least two courses from 300 level or higher) from the following list:

  • CME 106, Survey of Digital Media (3)
  • MK 280, Principles of Marketing (3)
  • CME 306, Multimedia Design and Production I (3)
  • CME 419, Interactive Web Development (3)
  • CME 422, New Media Distribution (3)
  • CME 432, Law & Regulation of Electronic Media (3)
