Annual Volunteer-Study Tour

The Volunteer-Study Tour, sponsored by the Office of Diversity Programs and the Efroymson Diversity Center, gives Butler students the opportunity to visit a major urban destination in the continental United States, participate in volunteer service, and tour historical and cultural sites within the area.

Implemented in 1987, the first Volunteer-Study Tour was a day trip to Chicago, IL. In 1988, the Volunteer-Study Tour expanded to a full weekend experience. For the past eleven years, the Volunteer-Study Tour has traveled to the city of New Orleans to lend assistance to the continued Hurricane Katrina recovery and redevelopment effort in the Lower 9th Ward. A brilliant mosaic of culture, history, tradition, and folklore, New Orleans has provided an invaluable service-learning experience for VST participants. The city remains the destination of choice for the tour by popular demand. With the devastation that remains in the Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans will remain the tour destination throughout the redevelopment process.
