I took my degrees from the University of California, Riverside-- I was asked in my interview if I was one of those California radicals, but I got the job anyway. I taught for two years at California State College, Los Angeles, before coming to Butler in 1971. I have taught here ever since--except for spring 2015 when I taught at Harlaxton College in the UK on my sabbatical.

The University has been transformed over my years here from a quasi-party school to an outstanding academic experience. I did some service over the years as Faculty Assembly Chair, interim Head of the English Department, Associate Dean of LAS, and interim Dean of the college. I was grateful to get back in the classroom full time. I have won several teaching awards, including the Mortar Board teacher of the year in LAS twice. I also twice gave the Baccalaureate talk to the graduating classes.

Shakespeare is my passion and I have published some essays about the plays, but my major interest is performance. Since 1987 I have taken groups of Butler students (sometimes faculty and staff, even parents) to the United Kingdom to see the plays performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and since the 90's by the New Shakespeare's Globe Company. Two weeks of Shakespeare--what could be more fun!!

My experience at Butler has been gratifying--and best of all, the students keep teaching me about my man!
