Prof. Laurent has been a member of the dance faculty at Butler since 1988. His expertise includes Ballet Technique, Masterworks of Dance, Choreography, and First-Year Seminar, the latter a subject he has taught since the inception of the revised Core Curriculum at Butler in 2007. He chaired the Department of Dance from 1988 to 2003.

Prof. Laurent's professional career was mostly accomplished in Europe, notably with the Ballet Royal de Wallonie in Belgium, the Scapino Ballet in Amsterdam, and the Bayreuther Festpiele under John Neumeier; he also danced professionally in this country. He was artistic director of the Des Moines Ballet (IA) from 1982-1988. His choreography output encompasses over 70 classical and contemporary works, many of which are now in the repertoire of the Butler Ballet.

Prof. Laurent emigrated from his native Switzerland into the US in 1977 and has long been a full citizen. He is a dedicated progressive both in politics and in education matters.
