D.J. Smith has served on the piano faculty of Butler University since2008. D.J. maintains his own private studio of students of all ages andperformance levels through the Butler Community Arts School. Passionate aboutadult education, D.J. also teaches recreational group piano classes for beginningadults. He holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Indiana WesleyanUniversity and a master’s in piano pedagogy from Butler University. He is anationally certified teacher in music (NCTM).
D.J. Smith serves on the board of directors of the Indiana MusicTeachers Association. He is the state coordinator of the IMTA Hoosier Auditions.D.J. performs regularly as soloist, collaborates with fellow artists, andfrequently lectures at conferences and festivals throughout the region. Recentprojects have included a performance of Carnival of the Animals in collaborationwith fellow faculty artists featured as part of the Butler ArtsFest 2014. Hehas also recently presented a lecture recital on the shorter piano works ofAlexander Scriabin for both the 2013 IMTA Conference and the Butler UniversityFaculty Artist Series.
Since 2009, D.J. Smith has served as pianist for the Church of theSaviour, a United Methodist congregation. In addition to providing specialmusic and playing for the congregation’s weekly worship services, Smith hasalso performed numerously for the church’s recital series. D.J. is currently inthe middle of his fifth season as pianist for the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus.
