Audition Process and Tips

The Butler dance audition day is designed to give dance applicants the opportunity to be evaluated in the most comprehensive manner as is possible. The day also provides information on admissions, degree plans, departmental policies and financial aid, and includes tours of the dance department and campus. The audition day begins in Lilly Hall with an 8:00 AM check-in. Following remarks from the Jordan College of the Arts associate dean and the Department chair, auditioners participate in their first ballet class. This class, for applicants only, is adjudicated by the entire full-time dance faculty. In the afternoon the auditioners participate in their second ballet class. These afternoon classes give the auditioners the opportunity to dance alongside current Butler dance majors. The women are randomly assigned to ballet Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 and the men take the Men's Ballet class.  Audition classes are taught by current full-time dance faculty and are not en pointe.

Female dancers should wear a black, solid color leotard with pink tights, wear flat ballet shoes and hair in a bun. Male dancers should wear black tights, a fitted shirt of solid color and ballet shoes.

The audition day begins at 8:00 AM and concludes at 5:00 PM

All applicants who audition for the dance program are held to the same standard of excellence independent of his or her chosen degree plan. All applicants are required to audition in person on one of the official audition dates listed on the application. Digital auditions are accepted only from candidates living outside the contiguous 48 states.
