The Ballet Russe Collection

One-act ballet choreographed by Leonide Massine.
Libretto and music by Jaromir Weinberger.
Sets by Oliver Smith.
Costumes by Alvin Colt.
Premiere: New York, October 19, 1941, by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.

...truly disastrous ballet... a would-be comedy about love and horseracing at a New York spa... In his memoirs, Massine claims he knew at the outset it would be disastrous... Reviews were scathing.

Jack Anderson, The One and Only: The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo

The backdrop and a set of mismatched legs is all that remains of this apparently unsuccessful ballet, which stayed in the repertoire for only one season (1941-42). The drop is now unfortunately quite heavily stained; the picture above has been touched up to approximate what it may have looked like. See a picture of the "real" drop below.
