We have many options, such as attending <em><strong>Journal Club<\/strong><\/em>, where we get together to discuss cutting-edge research in our field, attending the <em><strong>Undergraduate Research Conference<\/strong><\/em>, enrolling in an <strong><em>Independent Study<\/em> or <em>Faculty Guided Research<\/em><\/strong> course with one of our faculty members, or even conducting a scientific research project as an <em><strong>Honors Thesis<\/strong><\/em>. You do NOT have to be a member of the Honors program to write an Honors Thesis in the CSD department. Research opportunities are open to ALL students regardless of GPA or Honors status. Talk to your advisor if you\u2019re interested in our research opportunities!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are in the <em>Honors program<\/em> (requiring minimal major GPA of 3.8), these are the research requirements for each year of your Butler University \/ SLHS career:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Honors Thesis Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Year 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attend journal club<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring: Attend URC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Year 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attend journal club<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start thinking about research topic (e.g., something in SLHS that you&#8217;re interested in)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring: Attend URC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By spring of this academic year, talk to potential research advisor(s)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Year 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attend journal club; present one of the articles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fall: work on thesis research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring: write honors thesis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First thesis draft &#8211; due around <strong>February<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Penultimate thesis draft due around <strong>March<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Final thesis due around <strong>April<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring: apply to present at URC &#8211; <strong>January or February<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spring: prepare presentation and attend URC &#8211; usually in <strong>April<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Also think about applying for other research conferences (talk to your advisor about this)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Honors Thesis credit: register for 499 either semester)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/honors\/honors-thesis\/\"><strong>Honors Thesis<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Honors Thesis Proposal is typically due in March of your junior year: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/honors\/honors-thesis-proposal\/\">Honors Proposal Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Honors Thesis is due around spring semester final exams of your senior year: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/honors\/thesis-guidelines\/\">Honors Thesis Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/undergraduate-research-conference\/\"><strong>Butler Undergraduate Research Conference (URC)<\/strong><\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditionally the 2nd Friday in April<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submissions accepted beginning January, usually due in February&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/undergraduate-research\/\"><strong>Undergraduate Research Grants<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Honors Thesis Grant<\/strong> ($500 max)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/3\/2022\/02\/08093501\/Honors-Thesis-Grant-Application-Fillable.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thesis Grant Application<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Deadline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For proposals approved in the spring semester the deadline for grant submission is <strong>September 1<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For proposals approved in the fall semester the deadline for grant submission is <strong>October 30<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travel to Present Conference Grant<\/strong> ($250 max)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/3\/2022\/10\/08093426\/Travel_to_Present_Grant_Application-22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Travel to Present Grant Form<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deadline: The proposal should be submitted on the first of the month, at least one month prior to planned travel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/engaged-learning\/butlersummerinstitute\/\"><strong>Butler Summer Institute<\/strong><\/a> (can apply for summer following any year other than senior)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>12-week summer research program, pays room &amp; Please see your potential advisor if this is the case &#8211; you will need to start developing your research topic in preparation for the proposal directly with your advisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-child-language-lab\">Child Language Lab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Child Language Lab at Butler University we study language development in monolingual and bilingual preschool-aged children. The purpose of our research is to contribute to our understanding of the language learning difficulties of some children, and help improve the ways in which we provide intervention for these children. We see children in our lab on campus in Jordan Hall as well as at local schools and daycares. Butler undergraduate students have the opportunity to learn hands-on about a variety of aspects of the research process in our lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our most recent studies investigate word learning in children with language disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-music-speech-and-language-lab\">Music, Speech, and Language Lab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Music, Speech, and Language Lab explores the development of music and spoken language in children and adults. The focus of our work is examining feeding in context: relative to environment, experience, and cross-system development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undergraduate students can participate in feeding
