CAT utilizes Canvas courses to provide on-demand training to meet your busy schedule. Training content is either created in-house by the CAT team or carefully curated from a combination of vendor content and existing well-developed Creative Commons licensed content, and the trainings are completed asynchronously. Many of the courses listed below use Canvas’ “self-enrollment” feature, meaning you can sign up right now with no restrictions; simply click the enroll link to start the enrollment process. If a course is not using self-enrollment, follow the instructions in the course description for next steps.
Canvas 101 Training for Instructors
This self-enroll course is designed to get you familiar with Canvas. Structured into eight modules, the course covers the overall Canvas interface, content and activity creation, grading, and user settings. If you would like a sandbox to practice the skills covered in this course, complete the Sandbox Request form.
This course will help you to pivot between face-to-face instruction, hybrid/flipped formats, and online course delivery. Enrollment with your dean’s approval is required for those new to teaching online or hybrid courses at Butler. Faculty not required to take the course but who have interest in doing so for their own professional development will also need their Dean’s approval.
To earn a Pivot Pedagogy completion certificate and stipend, you need to complete a minimum of eight modules. To enroll in Pivot Pedagogy, complete the enrollment survey.
Two REQUIRED modules include:
- Keeping Accessibility Front of Mind and
- Flipped Classroom Approaches
For your remaining six modules, choose from an assortment of topics. Options include:
- Five modules focused on pedagogy
- Nine modules focused on technology, and
- One module on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Faculty who previously completed Pivot Pedagogy or simply want to reference the content may see a read-only version of the course.

Infobase Learning Cloud
Butler subscribes to Infobase Learning Cloud (formerly Hoonuit), a web-based repository of online, on demand, tutorials covering a range of topics including software, soft skills, career readiness, accessibility, and more. Butler faculty, staff, and students can more that 1,700 courses and 100,000 step-by-step tutorials by logging into Infobase with their Butler email and password at infobase.butler.edu.

During this workshop, the CAT team gave a brief overview of several tools in open breakout sessions with the College of Education. The purpose of this session was to spark new ideas for student engagement in the classroom, especially in an online/hy-flex context, instead of comprehensively covering each tool. The topics included:

This workshop addressed rubric design and implementation. Attendees were asked to come with an idea of a rubric for a specific assignment for one of their course student learning outcomes; during the workshop, attendees designed rubrics for their assignment and then built the rubric in Canvas. Attendees also learned how to use and modify existing rubrics in Canvas and how to grade assignments using the Canvas rubric tool.
- Using an assignment from one of your courses, identify how it aligns with Student Learning Outcomes at the module, course, and program level (as appropriate).
- Describe the importance of rubrics for you as an instructor and for your students.
- Differentiate between the three types of rubrics.
- Using the process shown during the workshop, design your own rubric.
- Reflect on factors that may influence your grading decisions.
This quick and practical session focused on how to write Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) appropriate for the degree level of your course and its strategic placement within the program curriculum. The discussion emphasized getting the most from Bloom’s taxonomy and tips for writing solid and measurable outcomes to guide the design of course content and assessments.

Getting Started with Canvas
These facilitated sessions are designed to get Canvas newbies up and running with the essentials of Canvas. In particular, participants will learn how to navigate Canvas, create a profile, locate support options, use Conversations (course email), post a syllabus and announcement, create an assignment, module and use speedgrader. In this session, participants will learn the basics of Assessment tools in Canvas. Participants will create a graded discussion forum, an assignment for online submission, and a basic quiz. Additionally, the Attendance Tool will be covered. View now. (37 min)
In this session, we will cover all aspects of the Quizzes tool in Canvas. Participants will start with creating a basic quiz and then move to exploring all of the advanced features. We will address the use cases for the different types of quizzes as well as the various options when creating a quiz. A basic understanding of Canvas is recommended but not required. View now. Learn how to take advantage of all the tools built into Canvas for student collaboration such as groups, peer reviewing and discussions. We will also look at the Collaboration tool which integrates with Google Docs which streamlines sharing among group members. View now. (27 min)
Faculty will learn how to access the Speedgrader, add assignment comments and markups, and use a pre-existing rubric for grading. View now. (29 min)
Panopto / Canvas Studio
Participants will explore the Panopto and Canvas Studio integrations with Canvas and will learn how to:
- Set up their course for each/either tool,
- Add faculty-created content to the course,
- Create student video assignments,
- Use the discussion features of both tools,
- Embed quizzes in videos.

Getting Started with Panopto
This training walks through how to turn on Panopto in your Canvas course, how to download the recorder, and how to do a basic recording. View now (22 min)
This training covers how to enable Panopto in Canvas, how to create a recording, how to share the recording with students, and how to add quizzes to videos. Additionally, faculty will learn how to set up Panopto assignments where students can upload videos and how to view submissions in the SpeedGrader. Finally, faculty will learn how to record and upload to Canvas Studio and add Studio videos to a course. View now. (100 min)
Getting Started with Proctorio
By the end of this training, faculty will be able to:
- add Proctorio to their course;
- create a Proctorio assessment;
- select appropriate Proctorio settings;
- use the Proctorio gradebook; and
- know how students will experience Proctorio.
