Statement Against Anti-Asian Racism
In holding with the founding principles of Butler University, the Faculty Senate expresses unequivocal support for Asian and Asian American students, faculty, and staff in our community. This is in light of the verbal and physical violence that persons of Asian descent have experienced in the United States and globally because of anti-Asian racism following the COVID-19 pandemic. We reject racism, xenophobia, and nativism, and stand with those who have been harmed by all forms of anti-Asian incidents. We call on all members of Butler University to actively resist ill-informed, biased perspectives about China, Chinese people, and all other Asian people assumed to be from there. We further urge all members of the Butler community to continue to uphold our institutional values of diversity, equality, and inclusion at this difficult moment in our national history.

Message from President James M. Danko
March 18, 2021
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
Since the beginning of the pandemic, our nation has seen a surge of hate crimes, bias incidents, and racist bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), who had already faced discrimination in our country for centuries. Butler University stands against discrimination and hate against all people, and actively supports the AAPI community. I’m proud to say that Butler is an institutional sponsor of the Indiana Chapter of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum’s petition to Governor Holcomb calling for concrete action in protecting Asian Americans in Indiana.
I ask that the Butler community unite in solidarity with the AAPI community. Please reach out to fellow AAPI students, faculty, and staff to acknowledge their struggle and offer your support. Together, we can make a difference on our campus and in our community.
Incidents of bias against anyone on the Butler University campus will not be tolerated. If you are a victim of, or witness to, a bias incident, please report the incident online or contact BUPD immediately. Let’s work together to support an inclusive learning and working environment in which all Butler community members are welcomed, respected, and supported.
Sincerely,
James M. Danko
President, Butler University
