The volume presents research on eyewitness identification as an exemplary case of psychological science applied to real-world problems. Those interested in forensic and cognitive psychology who seek to understand the relationship between memory processes and the criminal justice system should read!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Audrey Ecelbarger (&#8217;26) will present her original Honors thesis research at the American Psychology-Law Society conference as a paper talk. Audrey worked on this experimental project with Dr. Fabiana Alceste during the summer of 2025 as part of the Butler Summer Institute program. She has already presented her research at the annual conference of the Indiana Academy of Social Sciences, and will represent Butler in Reno at AP-LS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Fabiana Alceste has published an invited chapter in a psychology and law handbook titled &#8220;Confessions and Guilty Pleas of Youth: Developmental Science and Practical Implications.&#8221; The chapter, &#8220;Defining and determining custody through a developmental lens&#8221; was co-authored with alumna Reece Butler (&#8217;24). This chapter is about the legal and psychological implications of how minors understand custodial police interrogations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maddie Stine (&#8217;25) has won second place in the Undergraduate Research Paper competition put on by the American Psychology-Law Society (AP-LS). This project represents her Honors thesis research on juveniles&#8217; perceptions of police interrogation tactics, mentored by Dr. Fabiana Alceste. She was automatically accepted to give a poster presentation at the AP-LS annual conference in Reno, NV in March of 2026. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Karina Hamamouche has become a Faculty Fellow with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cic.edu\/networks\/netvue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE)<\/a>. NetVUE is a nationwide network of over 300 colleges and universities formed to support and enrich vocational exploration and discernment among undergraduate students. Dr. Hamamouche received this honor for her sustained engagement with the network and her commitment to incorporating vocational themes into her courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Conor O&#8217;Dea received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/student-life\/parents-families\/leadership-impact-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Butler University Family Council Leadership Impact Award<\/a> which recognizes faculty and staff for their contributions to the learning and development of current Butler students. Faculty are nominated by the parents of current students. His nominator included the following, \u201cDr. O\u2019Dea is caring, passionate about his students\u2019 learning in both the classroom and the lab, and not afraid to push his students in order to maximize their potential.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"acc-flex-container\">\n\t<div class=\"acc-title-container\" role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"3\">\n\t\t<button id='block_acf-block-69971aa7e9e52-acc-row' class='acc-row' type='button' aria-expanded='false' aria-controls='block_acf-block-69971aa7e9e52_acc-content-panel'>\n\t\t\t<div id='block_acf-block-69971aa7e9e52-acc-title' class='acc-title'>\n\t\t\t\t2022\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<img alt=\"\" id='block_acf-block-69971aa7e9e52-acc-img' class='acc-icon' src='https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/arts-sciences\/wp-content\/plugins\/butler-acf-blocks-new\/assets\/images\/nav_main_icon_open.png' \/>\n\t\t<\/button>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div role=\"region\" aria-hidden='true'\n\t\tid='block_acf-block-69971aa7e9e52-acc-content-panel' class='acc-panel' aria-labelledby=\"block_acf-block-69971aa7e9e52-acc-row\">\n\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-undergraduate-research-award-paves-the-way-for-the-next-generation-of-psychologists\">Undergraduate Research Award Paves the Way for the Next Generation of Psychologists<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2022\/08\/08102434\/04_20_2022_abby_037-1-300x246.png\" alt=\"Student award winner of the Psychology department\u2019s Dr. Burrton Woodruff Undergraduate Research Award\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of the hallmarks of a Butler education is its emphasis on a student-centered education. This means that students can tailor their studies, activities, and research to the subjects, ideas, and career fields that they\u2019re really interested in. This is nowhere more evident than in the Psychology department\u2019s Dr. Burrton Woodruff Undergraduate Research Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This award was established in 2005 by Psychology alumnus Stephen Stuart \u201974 to honor Psychology Emeritus Dr. Burrton Woodruff. Dr. Woodruff was a beloved professor who worked at Butler for 35 years. He also served as a professor and mentor to Stuart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI took a number of courses taught by Dr. Woodruff,\u201d Stuart says. \u201cI have great memories of my relationship with him. I recall him taking his students under his wing and really being a mentor. I had a terrific experience with him and with all of my Psychology professors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was those very relationships that inspired Stuart to establish this scholarship, which helps cover portions of Butler\u2019s tuition for juniors and seniors majoring or minoring in Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recipients of the scholarship must be engaged in a research project with preference given to those with approved Honors thesis projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know there are students who have to put together all sorts of elaborate scholarships and aid to even be able to get through school, so I was hoping this scholarship\u2014whose recipients are chosen by the Psychology professors\u2014could help alleviate some of that stress,\u201d Stuart says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the students who has received this scholarship is Abey Akinseye, a 2022 graduating Psychology and Sociology double major, minoring in Art + Design. Akinseye has always known that he wanted to study Psychology and Sociology, and chose Butler due to its emphasis on student-centered learning, mentorship, and the fact that it\u2019s only an eight minute drive away from his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Nigerian and there\u2019s not a lot of discourse in non-western cultures about mental illness and understanding mental health in society. I\u2019ve always wanted to study Psychology and Sociology for this reason,\u201d Akinseye says. \u201cButler was the perfect fit academically, financially, and based on its location. I\u2019m so glad I chose to study here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Akinseye was chosen as a recipient of the Dr. Burrton Woodruff Undergraduate Research Award, due in part to his Honors research thesis. Entitled \u201cArt, Race, and the Carceral System: Perceptions of Criminality in Artful Expression,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Akinseye\u2019s thesis examines why rap music is viewed as more \u201ccriminal\u201d than other musical genres and why juries are more likely to attribute criminal stereotypes to rappers. He presented his thesis at the American Psychology\u2013Law Society Conference in Denver in March, and then again at Butler\u2019s own Undergraduate Research Conference in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been really interested in research, but was a little unsure about what my next steps would be after I graduated from Butler,\u201d Akinseye says. \u201cMy advisor, Dr.  Alceste, encouraged me to apply for the scholarship during my junior year. I submitted a write-up of my thesis, and ended up getting the scholarship. It was validation that I was on the right track and that I could be a great researcher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since receiving the scholarship, Akinseye says that it\u2019s encouraged him to take his research seriously and he\u2019s since decided to apply for very competitive doctoral programs in Psychology. He recently found out that he was accepted into his first choice program at Oakland University in Michigan. After obtaining his doctoral degree, he hopes to become a Psychology professor and inspire a new generation of students, just like his professors\u2014and Stephen Stuart\u2019s\u2014did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGetting this scholarship was huge for me,\u201d Akinseye says. \u201cNot only did it help financially, but it gave me a huge confidence boost. I attribute most of my recent successes to having confidence in myself that I probably wouldn\u2019t have had without receiving this award. She collects feedback from users when they interact with Google technology or products, aiming to see what can be improved.
