Here are just a few examples of recent research:<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political Science students and <strong>Assistant Professor Su-Mei Ooi<\/strong> have co-authored articles for The Diplomat, a premier international current-affairs magazine. The articles explore <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2015\/03\/chinas-new-silk-road-and-its-impact-on-xinjiang\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Central Asia Political Power Rivals Article\">political power rivalries in Central Asia<\/a>, the decline of <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2015\/09\/hong-kongs-umbrella-movement-one-year-later\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Democratic Activism in Hong Kong Article\">democratic activism in Hong Kong<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2014\/03\/xi-jinping-and-social-media-harnessing-the-peoples-voice\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"President of China's conflicting stances on social media use article\">President of China\u2019s conflicting stances on social media use<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political Science <strong>Professor Siobhan McEvoy-Levy<\/strong>, along with <strong>Associate Professor of Dance\u00a0Derek Reid<\/strong> served as advisors to <strong>Alex Zaslav<\/strong> on her honors thesis, \u201cThe Political Dimensions of Dance.\u00a0The Viability of Dance as a Tool for Generating Conflict- Awareness and Peacebuilding in the Context of the Arab-Israeli Conflict.\u201d A Dance major minoring in Political Science, Zaslav spent a semester studying\u00a0abroad in Israel where she conducted research for her thesis with participants in a school-based program called Minds in Motion.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McEvoy-Levy has served as a Fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/arts-sciences\/peace-lab\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Desmond Tutu Center\">Desmond Tutu Center (DTC) for Peace, Reconciliation and Global Justice<\/a>. At the core of DTC programming is an objective to initiate and encourage vigorous scholarly engagement through research and exchange with individuals, institutions and networks. The Tutu Fellows program supports the training of both faculty and students researchers at Butler University and Christian Theological Seminary, many of whom are uniquely poised to make discoveries in global justice issues.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student DTC fellow and Political Science major <strong>Hadeel Said \u201917<\/strong> attended the 2016 Progressive Congress Strategy Summit held in Baltimore, Maryland. One of the few student delegates, Said was surrounded by prominent politicians, activists, scholars, community leaders, religious leaders, economists, and journalists, and heard presentations on \u201cDemocracy and Civic Engagement,\u201d \u201cInvesting in Public Education,\u201d \u201cProgressive Foreign Policy,\u201d and \u201cBuilding Social Justice and Global Economy Equity Through Faith.\u201d\u00a0She had the opportunity to sit next to Commissioner Jesus &#8220;Chuey&#8221; Garcia, the face of Chicago\u2019s Progressive movement, and met Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson, California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, and Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of <strong>Associate Professor Terri Jett\u2019s<\/strong> classes has been helping produce the Tutu Center\u2019s Books and Breakfast series on Michelle Alexander\u2019s challenging\u00a0book,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newjimcrow.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"The New Jim Crow\"><em>The New Jim Crow<\/em><\/a>.
