In Japan, she captained the Under-17 Women\u2019s National soccer team.<\/p><p>\u201cI have aspirations to play professionally in Europe and for the Japan\u2019s Women\u2019s National squad,\u201d Kashimoto said. She\u2019d also like to promote soccer in her own country. \u201cI am not sure if that will be as a coach, a sports psychologist, a sports media promoter, or something else.\u201d<\/p><p>The IM lets Kashimoto\u00a0\u201cstudy sport more holistically,\u201d she said. \u201cThrough a selection of courses across several disciplines and colleges, I hope to gain new knowledge about sport as a biological, psychological, and cultural phenomenon.\u201d<\/p><p>As part of her IM, Kashimoto wants to complete an internship in sports media, possibly with the Indianapolis 11, the city\u2019s professional men\u2019s soccer team.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-secondary-block alignfull\" >\n\t<div class=\"container grid-default wysiwyg__container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg__wrapper wysiwyg__wrapper--hasSidebar\">\n\t\t\t<!-- content from editor -->\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg__content wysiwyg__contentContainer\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Political Science and Italian Language<\/h2><p><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lauren Hodge \u201912, JD<\/h3><div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2021\/10\/08103026\/laurenhodge-callout-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lauren Hodge in professional attire\"\/><\/figure><\/div><p>Lauren Hodge said Italian \u201cfound me at Butler University, ignited my passions, and took me around the world.\u201d After taking language courses for two years, she used the Individualized Major Program to make Italian her second major along, with Political Science. \u201cMy IMP advisors not only believed in my goal of having an Italian major but also believed in me, she said.<\/p><p>Like most IM students, she independently sought out experiential learning opportunities in her majors. She interned in Milan, Italy, for an international law firm one summer, and with the U.S. Department of Justice Office of International Affairs Criminal Division, through Butler\u2019s Washington, DC Learning Semester. She interpreted and translated English documents and law into Italian in both posts.<\/p><p>Today, Hodge clerks for the U.S. District Court Judge for Northern Indiana, a job she started while earning her law degree. \u201cMy focus on international law has shifted as my love affair with the courtroom came into focus,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom keeping my mind open, to being able to adapt, my studies and travels serve me well daily.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-secondary-block alignfull\" >\n\t<div class=\"container grid-default wysiwyg__container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg__wrapper wysiwyg__wrapper--hasSidebar\">\n\t\t\t<!-- content from editor -->\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg__content wysiwyg__contentContainer\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global-Cultural Studies Through Media<\/h2><p><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caitlin Ladd \u201918<\/h3><div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2021\/10\/08103026\/individualized-caitlinladdcallout-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Caitlyn Ladd smiling at the camera\"\/><\/figure><\/div><p>Caitlin Ladd believes that popular books, magazines, and films offer \u201camazing insights\u201d into historical moments, cultural beliefs, and how individuals construct personal identities.\u00a0 The IM lets her \u201cpursue interdisciplinary study of popular media and culture in ways that majoring in one distinct LAS major would not make possible,\u201d she said. Her personalized curriculum draws from several liberal arts disciplines\u2014English, history, anthropology, communication, and cultural studies\u2014and covers a wide range of subject: \u201cGone with the Wind,\u201d Australia\u2019s \u201cMad Max\u201d film franchise, novels by Charles Dickens, and post-Word War II Japanese \u201cmanga,\u201d or graphic novels.<\/p><p>She studied culture and media in Japan during summer 2016, and hopes to spend a semester at the University of Glascow in Scotland.<\/p><p>\u201cI will be learning transferrable skills, such as critical reading and writing,\u201d Ladd said. \u201cI think my major will allow me to be an advocate for appreciating and working to understand other cultures in the world and improving global relations.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-secondary-block alignfull\" >\n\t<div class=\"container grid-default wysiwyg__container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg__wrapper wysiwyg__wrapper--hasSidebar\">\n\t\t\t<!-- content from editor -->\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg__content wysiwyg__contentContainer\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chinese Language and Culture<\/h2><p><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eshan Pua \u201915<\/h3><div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2021\/10\/08103026\/individualized-eshanpuacallout-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Eshan Pua holding a drink and looking at the camera\"\/><\/figure><\/div><p>Eshan Pau grew up in a Chinese-speaking household and lived in the Philippines and Malaysia before coming to the United States at age 8. \u201cBut, I did not know how to read or write Chinese,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>At Butler, Pua studied Communication Sciences and Disorders, as preparation for a graduate degree in speech language pathology. She also took several Chinese language courses, leading to her IM. Professor Xiaoqing Liu helped her arrange a summer study abroad trip to China through Indianapolis\u2019 Confucius Institute. Pua interacted with students at Sun-Yat Sen University in Guangzhou, visited historical sites, and helped out at an orphanage.<\/p><p>Many of the orphans Pau met had disabilities that affected their communication; she envisioned assisting them as a speech language pathologist (SLP).
