Our next total solar eclipse in Indianapolis will not be until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2153-october-17\">October of 2153<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong style=\"color: var(--color-blue-butler); font-family: var(--font-family-base); font-size: var(--font-size-body);\">Where will the eclipse be?<\/strong> &#8211; Though all of Indiana will experience a partial solar eclipse only southeastern half of the state will be in the path of totality, with the exception of some areas along the Ohio river.&nbsp; The <a href=\"http:\/\/xjubier.free.fr\/en\/site_pages\/solar_eclipses\/xSE_GoogleMap3.php?Ecl=+20240408&amp;Acc=1&amp;Umb=1&amp;Lmt=1&amp;Mag=1&amp;Lat=39.78411&amp;Lng=-86.16004&amp;Zoom=8&amp;LC=1\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"font-family: var(--font-family-base); font-size: var(--font-size-body);\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"path of totalicy\">path of totality<\/a> will be about 115 miles wide and will stretch from near Friendship to Frankfort with Franklin on the center line.&nbsp; Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium, one of the largest public observatories in the nation, and Indianapolis will be near the center of the path.&nbsp; Outside of this path of totality the Sun will remain shining though at a reduced amount and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/arts-sciences\/holcomb-observatory\/eclipse-glasses\/\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"font-family: var(--font-family-base); font-size: var(--font-size-body);\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"eclipse viewing safety\">you cannot look directly at the Sun without protection<\/a> during its partial phases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Why&nbsp; should I be in the <a href=\"http:\/\/xjubier.free.fr\/en\/site_pages\/solar_eclipses\/xSE_GoogleMap3.php?Ecl=+20240408&amp;Acc=1&amp;Umb=1&amp;Lmt=1&amp;Mag=1&amp;Lat=39.78411&amp;Lng=-86.16004&amp;Zoom=8&amp;LC=1\">path of totality<\/a>?<\/strong> &#8211; In the path of totality is where all the magic occurs!&nbsp; &nbsp;As totality nears the birds will begin to roost, insects will begin chirping, the sky will take on a strange hue as the Moon&#8217;s shadow comes toward you at 2000 mph from the southwest, it will then get dark, the brighter stars and planets will appear, and the totally eclipsed Sun will appear as a black orb with its beautiful outer corona revealed.&nbsp; <strong><em>So make sure that you get yourself into the path of totality, <\/em><\/strong><em>e<\/em>ven if it is just a couple of miles within the path!&nbsp; Just remember that even if you have a 99% partially eclipsed Sun, it is still 0% totality and you&#8217;d miss all the wonderful magic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How is this different from 2017?<\/strong> &#8211;  During the 2017 partial solar eclipse, in Indianapolis the Sun was only 90% eclipsed.   This would have been barely noticeable to the human eye since the eye  adapts so well to different lighting conditions.    Within the path of totality in 2024 the Sun&#8217;s photosphere will be completely covered and the Sun will be nearly 100,000 times dimmer than 2017!  A partial solar eclipse in no way prepares you for what you&#8217;ll experience during a total solar eclipse. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How long will totality will last?<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; During totality the Moon will completely cover the Sun causing day to turn quickly to twilight. At the very center of the path the Sun will be totally eclipsed for nearly four minutes. For the Indianapolis area, totality will last roughly 3 minutes 50 seconds.\u00a0 The partial phases (eye protection required) will last roughly 1 hour 20 minutes either side of totality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Is it safe to be outside during the eclipse?<\/strong> &#8211; Absolutely!&nbsp; Sunlight during an eclipse is no different than normal. Just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/arts-sciences\/holcomb-observatory\/eclipse-glasses\/\">wear proper eye protection<\/a> <em>to look directly at the Sun<\/em>. You should never look directly at the Sun without solar viewing glasses or filters sold by astronomical specialists which block more than 99.999% of visible light and 100% of Infrared and Ultraviolet light.&nbsp; Holcomb Observatory will be selling eclipse glasses in the run up to the eclipse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How rare are total solar eclipses?<\/strong> &#8211; Your chances of seeing a total solar eclipse at any given location on the Earth is roughly once every 375 years.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not that total solar eclipses are rare in how often they occur \u2014 they occur every year or two somewhere on the Earth&#8217;s surface \u2014 it&#8217;s that width of the totality is relatively small at around 100 miles.&nbsp; So they are literally a once in a lifetime event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What if it&#8217;s cloudy April 8?<\/strong> &#8211; If you are in the path of totality the plunge into darkness will be much more dramatic, especially if it&#8217;s cloudy! You may miss the fully eclipsed Sun and its corona but won&#8217;t notice light changes until about a minute or two before totality.
