My students engage in course projects and activities focused on Sustainability, Green Chemistry, and highlighting scientific contributions from a diverse body of scientists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Courses taught: &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Organic Chemistry I and II with labs&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (Organometallics\/Catalysis)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additional courses taught at prior institution: General Chemistry, Honors Thesis Research and Writing, Thesis Support and Career Development course&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Inorganic\/Organic Research <\/u>focused on developing efficient transition-metal catalysts for small-molecule organic transformations, such as alcohol acceptorless dehydrogenation, an atom-economical and green oxidation method. My research group synthesizes new 2,2&#8242;-bis(di(2-X-phenylphosphino)-type ligands and their corresponding Ru(II) complexes. These are biomimetically designed to allow for metal-ligand cooperative effects during catalysis. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We employ a variety of research methods in this work, e.g.,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 air- and moisture-free organic and inorganic synthesis &amp; purification (Schlenk Line &amp; Glove Box)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 31P, and 2D NMR techniques)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Single crystal X-ray crystallography of transition metal complexes&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><u>Chemical Education Research<\/u> interests include understanding student outcomes and perceptions of engaging in Organic Chemistry<br>\ncourse-embedded research and writing projects. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prior work:<\/strong> through student surveys, this project focused on measuring student perceptions and impacts of completing an Organic Chemistry I lecture course-embedded research project where students developed information literacy skills and learned about organic chemistry contributions toward global sustainability. In this course, instead of lab reports, students wrote five two-page Decision Memoranda Reports and a full Journal Article, in parts with multiple rounds of peer review and revision. Pre- and post- course surveys revealed that this curriculum helped students learn about writing in the sciences and improve their relationship with and attitudes about writing and their writing identity. Students also perceived gains in their development of several transferable skills. While working at various health care organizations specializing in pre-transfusion testing, I completed post-baccalaureate courses in chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh.&nbsp; In 2001 I transitioned to full time graduate studies at Pitt and obtained my PhD in organic chemistry in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>One of my passions is exposing and inspiring young people to the wonder of science, and I have been involved for over five years in planning and presenting public outreach events related to chemistry and STEM (science technology engineering and math) fields.&nbsp; This involvement has led to my service on the board of directors for a non-profit organization, the Science Education Foundation of Indiana, and as treasurer for the Indiana Section of the American Chemical Society.&nbsp; But the work relted to outreach that I have the greatest pride in is the course, Chemistry in the Community, that I developed and teach at Butler University.&nbsp; This course brings students out into the community and exposes them to the joys and challenges of STEM outreach, potentially inspiring their continued interest in sharing science with others.<\/p>\n<p>Starting&nbsp; We develop and apply new algorithms and methodologies to a variety of interesting problems in chemistry.&nbsp; My research focuses on the study of chemical processes in which strong electron correlation plays an important role.&nbsp;
