This essay was written for first-year students in a 3-credit course introducing the liberal arts and the Personal Development Portfolio program at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia.<\/p><p>Parker, Jo Ellen, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.academiccommons.org\/2014\/11\/13\/whats-so-liberal-about-higher-ed\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What&#8217;s So &#8220;Liberal&#8221; About Higher Ed?<\/a> An essay asking the question, &#8220;Are new digital technologies compatible with the aims and traditions of &#8220;liberal education?&#8221;&#8221;<\/p><p>Schneider, Carol Geary, and Humphreys, Debra, <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Putting-Liberal-Education-on\/26781\"> Putting Liberal Education on the Radar Screen<\/a>. Schneider is the president and Humphreys is the vice president for communications and public affairs at the Association of American Colleges and Universities.<\/p><p>Standler, Ronald B., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbs0.com\/edu.htm\">Why Attend College?<\/a> (2001). A personal response to this question, including the statement expressing the belief that &#8220;Education is about learning to think &#8211; learning different ways to analyze a problem and find a solution.&#8221;<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organizations<\/h3><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacu.org\/\">Association of American Colleges and Universities<\/a>: the home page of an organization that bills itself as &#8220;A voice and a force for liberal education in the 21 <sup>st<\/sup> century.
