Research<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are some examples of past student projects.\u00a0 All these were done outside normal coursework.\u00a0 If you are interested in doing a research project, talk to our faculty.\u00a0 There are several structured ways to do research at Butler, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/butlersummerinstitute\/\">Butler Summer Institute<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/arts-sciences\/mathematical-sciences\/student-research\/\">Math Research Camp<\/a> run by the Mathematical Sciences department.\u00a0 Occasionally, some of our faculty have access to research funding and can partially support a student or two.\u00a0 You can present the results of your work at Butler\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academics\/undergraduate-research-conference\/\">Undergraduate Research Conference<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tango: A New Programming href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ashley-zegiestowsky\">Ashley Zegiestowski<\/a> (2016) double-majored in Spanish and computer science.\u00a0 While at Butler, she spent a semester abroad in Argentina.\u00a0 For her <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.butler.edu\/ugtheses\/321\/\">honors thesis<\/a>, \u201cTango: A Spanish-Based Programming Language\u201d, she created her own, new, programming language that utilized Spanish keywords.\u00a0 She specified Tango\u2019s grammar and then wrote a cross-compiler, based on a recursive-descent parser, so she could run Tango programs.\u00a0 Her thesis includes a guessing-game program written in Tango.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GuideDawg Mobile App Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This app is like a \u201cGoogle maps\u201d for those who are visually impaired.\u00a0 The app using GPS on a smartphone, connects to a database of known landmarks within a building or on a small campus area, and gives audio signals when designated landmarks are near.\u00a0 An administrator can manage routes and landmarks through a web interface.\u00a0 The app was originally designed for use by the students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/isbvi\/\">Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex Node.js\/javascript, WordPress, and XCode (swift).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project was supported by a Butler Innovation Fund grant awarded to Prof. Panos Linos, the faculty supervisor for the project, which spanned several years.\u00a0 Students who worked on the project include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jacob-scheib-97006994\/\">Jacob Scheib<\/a>, Devin of 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/ellipsiseducation.com\">Ellipsis Education<\/a> (then known as Codelicious) was pulling together a digital textbook for teaching computer science to elementary and middle school students.\u00a0 In order to obtain state certification for Texas, their materials needed vetting by qualified computer scientists.\u00a0 However, the volume of material made it impractical to hire faculty or similar professionals to review everything.\u00a0 The CEO of Ellipsis Education, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/whitneydove\">Whitney Dove<\/a>, reached out to us for help.\u00a0 Under the supervision of Prof. Jon Sorenson, 23 Butler upper-division computer science and software engineering students read, reviewed, and commented on roughly 450 lessons, each including lesson plans, background material, and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Computer Science Meets Psychology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap and Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/catherine-bain-ph-d-63465b160\">Catherine Baine<\/a> (2020) on the paper \u201cThe Digital Despondency: A Computational Model of Depression\u201d.\u00a0 Abi presented this work at two conferences, one in Mexico and one in New York City at the \u00a02024 Society of Computation in Psychology conference, where she won the Castellan Best Paper Award.\u00a0 She was a triple major: computer science, psychology, and neuroscience.\u00a0 She is now a graduate student studying mathematical and computational psychology at Purdue University.\u00a0 Catherine majored in psychology and criminology, with minors in computer science and data science.\u00a0 She is currently a professor at California State University at Northridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-Driving Cars and V2X<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8f761849 summer of 2024 at an NSF REU site (National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates) at Lawrence Technological University (LTU), where she worked on a team researching algorithms, code, and AI for self-driving cars.\u00a0 In particular, they examined V2X communication systems to improve navigation and safety.\u00a0 V2X is where the car communicates with other cars and sensors positioned in the area to share information about hazards and obstacles that might be obstructed or out of range.\u00a0 The project was led by advisors Dr. Chan-Jin (CJ) Chung of LTU and Dr. Josh Siegel of Michigan State University.
