Writing Programs Conference<\/a>, held this year in Kansas City, MO, releasing their newest issue, <em>Booth<\/em> 19, in collaboration with writer Michael Martone\u2019s new memoir, \u201cTable Talk and Second Thoughts\u201d, and hosting a launch party celebrating the issue and the Indianapolis literary community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve continued to expand our local presence in Indiana and to develop our sense of collaboration,\u201d said <em>Booth<\/em> Managing Editor Jeff Marvel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy publishing this year&#8217;s edition of <em>Booth<\/em> as a double-bill with Michael Martone&#8217;s new memoir, we&#8217;ve taken another approach to weaving an outside project into our own. And by hosting a launch party featuring <em>Booth<\/em> writers, as well as authors publishing with other Indy literary groups, we&#8217;re continuing to find ways that <em>Booth<\/em> can platform literature beyond the constraints of the pages of our magazine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"928\" height=\"1146\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/IMG_5779-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17883\" style=\"width:262px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/IMG_5779-edited.jpg 928w, https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/IMG_5779-edited-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/IMG_5779-edited-829x1024.jpg 829w, https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/IMG_5779-edited-768x948.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Booth Editors Katie Peterson and Rob Stapleton at AWP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The lit mag, which debuted in 2009 and was founded by Butler English senior lecturer and <em>Booth<\/em> Editor-in-Chief Robert Stapleton, has published many recognizable names in the literary world in the years since it began, including Roxane Gay, Lee Martin, Alissa Nutting, Jonathan Lethem, Matt Bell, and Brad Watson, among others\u2014and published interviews with Viet Thanh Nguyen, Cheryl Strayed, Jonathan Franzen, George Saunders, Karen Russell and others. <em>Booth<\/em> publishes two print issues yearly, usually in summer and winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journal offers members of the Butler MFA community the opportunity to help curate and edit content for a literary journal and to interview visiting writers for potential publication. The staff is composed of current students, faculty, and alumni who fill editorial staff and reader positions. In addition to Michael Martone\u2019s memoir, which&nbsp; invites the reader into Martone&#8217;s memory bank of hanging out with writers like Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, Adrienne Rich, Louise Gluck, George Saunders, and many more, Booth 19 also includes \u2018Boothy\u2019 work from a variety of writers and original craft interviews with Viet Than Nguyen and Jo Ann Beard. The featured visual artist is American novelist Michael Dahlie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a magazine, Booth always seeks the unexpected,\u201d said Marvel. \u201cWe publish writing that exhibits a satisfyingly balanced mix of concept, gravity, and execution, continually redefining the identity of <em>Booth<\/em> as a magazine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Booth 19 launch party, held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tubefactory.org\/\">Tube Factory Artspace<\/a>, served as both a celebration of the new issue and the Indianapolis literary scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/Booth-19-tube-space-martone.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17884\" style=\"width:359px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/Booth-19-tube-space-martone.jpg 828w, https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/Booth-19-tube-space-martone-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.butler.edu\/www\/sites\/12\/2024\/05\/08102145\/Booth-19-tube-space-martone-768x570.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Booth 19 launch party at Tube Factory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur amazing genre editors introduced and read from one of their favorite pieces published in Booth 19. It was a great opportunity for attendees to hear work we were so proud to publish but also get a glimpse of the people behind the publication,\u201d said Peterson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Marvel says the focus will remain on growing the brand\u2019s reach in Indianapolis and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope <em>Booth<\/em> continues evolving and developing.
