ePortfolio
What is the ePortfolio?
Your ePortfolio is an online collection of your best work.
It shows how you’re progressing.
It can be used to show employers, graduate schools, and others how your experiences and humanities-infused skill sets make you the best, most qualified candidate for their organizations.
Is an ePortfolio Required?
Yes, beginning fall 2017 an ePortfolio is required for all students in Modern Languages courses numbered 203 and above.
Special Notes
- If you missed creating an ePortfolio before, that’s OK—just pick up where you are now.
- As it explains below, the URL for your ePortfolio will be something like http://blogs.butler.edu/tbutler (which is blogs.butler.edu + your Butler username).
Online Self-Evaluation (Every Semester)
Toward the end of every semester, please complete the two-minute, online Self-Evaluation (Assessment) at the link below:
Afterward you’ll receive an email with the results. Copy and paste those into a new Assessment post on your ePortfolio.
Instructions on how to add content to your ePortfolio can be found below.

Homepage Update
On the homepage of your ePortfolio, write in the language you’re studying information describing yourself (e.g., what you’re studying, where you plan to study abroad, what you hope to do with your Butler degree, etc.).
If text already exists, add more.
Written Sample
Choose what you think best represents your abilities (e.g., a paper or journal entry written for class).
It doesn’t matter if the sample was turned in for a grade, but the text you post should not have been corrected by an instructor.
Oral Sample
Choose what you think best represents you so far during the semester (e.g., reading text aloud, a conversation, a presentation, etc.).
It doesn’t matter if the sample was done for a grade, but what you post should not have been corrected by an instructor.
Recordings can be made using Panopto, voice recorders, video cameras, smartphone cameras, web cams, or smartphone apps (e.g., Smart Voice Recorder). You can find instructions to help you in the drop-downs below.
HOW TO: Create Your ePortfolio
Download the instructional guide. (PDF)
- Visit blogs.butler.edu.
- Click on “Register A Site” in the right-column “Links” box.
- In the main text area, click on the hyperlinked words “log in.”
- Enter your Butler username and password.
- In the “Site Name” field, enter your Butler username. If you already have a Butler ePortfolio (e.g., for the College of Education), add “1” after your username.
- In the “Site Title” field, enter the following: “Your First and Last Name + Language ePortfolio” (e.g., Jane Rodríguez Language ePortfolio).
- Under “Privacy,” click either the “Yes” or “No” radio buttons. This tells Google, Bing, and other search engines whether or not to index your ePortfolio and share it with the general public.
- In the “Select a Template” drop-down, click on “Modern Languages ePortfolio.” This is vital. Choose another template and you’ll have to delete this ePortfolio and start over.
- Click the “Create Site” button.
- In the main text area, click on the link for your ePortfolio (i.e., blogs.butler.edu/username).
HOW TO: Post Content
Download the instructional guide. (PDF)
Two notes:
- Please add content from a desktop or laptop, not a smartphone or tablet.
- We recommend using either the Google Chrome or Apple Safari web browsers.
- Visit blogs.butler.edu.
- Click “Login” in the right-hand column.
- Log in to the system using your Butler username and password.
- In the dark, vertical menu that runs along the left-side of the webpage, hover over “Posts” and click “All Posts.”
- Find the post to which you’ll add content and click on the title of the post.
- Note: If you’re not seeing a list of posts with titles like “Self Assessment–400 Level” and “Self Assessment–300 Level Content,” then you most likely did not select the correct ePortfolio template (“Modern Languages ePortfolio”). Please use the instructions below to delete your ePortfolio, and begin again.
- The main, content area (in the center of the webpage) is where you’ll add text and media. Please type at least a sentence to begin the post. It can briefly describe what’s to follow (e.g., “This is audio of me presenting before my SP 305 class regarding cultural and environmental impacts from the expansion of the Panama Canal.”).
- Hit “enter” or “return” on your keyboard to drop to a new line.
- If you’re posting something you’ve written, you can simply copy the text from its Microsoft Word or Google Docs document (on your computer or your Google Drive), and paste the text directly into the main, content area on the webpage.
- To add video, follow the instructions below.
- To add images or documents, hit “enter” or “return” on your keyboard to drop to a new line. Then click the “Add Media” button atop the main, content area’s toolbar.
- Drag and drop the image or document file onto the large, white box that appears. Click the bottom-right, teal “Select Files” button. (You can also navigate to and select the image or document file on your computer by clicking the white “Select Files” button in the center of the white box.)
- Progress bars will appear as your file(s) is/are uploaded.
- When the bar has finished, click on the icon for the image/document(s), then click the bottom-right, teal “Insert into post” button.
- Note: if the system won’t accept your image, please click the top-right “X” (close) button in the large, white area. Then proceed to the next step.
- Click the teal “Publish”—or “Update”—button in the right-hand column.
- If you aren’t redirected to the published post automatically, you can view it by clicking “View Post” in the dark, horizontal bar running atop the webpage.
Note: If the system didn’t accept your file upload, please check in with your language advisor or professor.
HOW TO: Upload Video
Download the instructional guide. (PDF)
- Log in to YouTube with your Butler username and password.

- Log in to your ePortfolio.
- Locate and click into the Post that you’ll embed your YouTube video in.
- The main, content area (in the center of the webpage) is where you’ll add text and media. Please type at least a sentence to begin the post. It can briefly describe what’s to follow (e.g., “This is my SP 375 group’s mini, spy movie explaining the subjunctive.”).
- In the main, content area’s toolbar, click the YouTube icon.
- Paste in the URL (i.e., the YouTube link that you’d use to share the video via your computer or mobile device).
- Click the “OK” button.
- Click the teal “Publish” button in the right-hand column.

- Click “Download Podcast.”
HOW TO: Add ‘Private Viewers’
Note: Adding a “Private Viewer” to your ePortfolio means that, when they’re logged in to blogs.butler.edu, they’ll be able to see all of your content, whether it’s been “published” publicly or not.
Download the instructional guide. (PDF)
- Log in to your ePortfolio.
- From your Dashboard, click on the “Users” icon. (It looks like a person.)
- Click on the “Add New” button.
- In the “E-mail” field, enter the person’s Butler email address.
- Click the “Add Existing User” button.
An email is then sent to the person you invited. The email contains a link that they must follow in order to be added to your ePortfolio as a viewer.
