The Engineering Student Agency (ESA) is a volunteer-based group of student ambassadors for the EDDP. The ESA participates in campus events that support recruitment and engagement for the EDDP. Talk to ESA students at Butler Open Houses and admitted student events.

Biomedical Engineering
Chloe Gonterman
Year in program and majors: 4th year; Biomedical Engineering and Biology
How did you hear about the EDDP? The good ‘ol Google search of “biomedical engineering programs midwest”
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? The community I experienced at Butler when I visited and how comfortable I felt. After meeting my “True Blue”, Maddi, and hearing about her Butler experience I knew I wanted to have the same. I knew I wanted to be an engineer; being welcomed into a program with so many smiles and “hellos” before I was even at Butler was an awesome experience.
What is an experience you have had here that you may not have had at another school? Getting to know so many students studying different things, as well as getting the opportunity to learn about other interesting topics such as anthropology and religion (thanks to Butler’s Core Curriculum) has diversified my understand of the world and the people in it. Also, having the ability to be super involved in many organizations on campus, like Food Recovery Network and Alpha Chi Omega, while still being able to be a dedicated student!
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? We are a community that stands together when things (school, life) gets tough. We have fun together, encourage each other, and laugh at each other…frequently.

Blakely Heaton
Year in program and majors: 4th year (accelerated graduation in 4 years); Biomedical Engineering and Biology
How did you hear about the EDDP? I was originally interested in Butler for the Physician Assistant (PA) program, but soon realized that I wouldn’t be taking math classes. I started looking for other majors with more math, and found the EDDP website. I called Jess (the EDDP Academic Program Coordinator) the summer before I came to Butler. After speaking with her, I knew that I had found the right program for me. She helped me change my major and create a schedule that allowed me to finish in four years, and assured me that everything was going to be okay.
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? The EDDP allowed me to pursue two degrees that I am passionate about at universities that I fell in love with. Every day my professors, peers, and mentors reaffirm that decision.
How well would you say the EDDP has prepared you for your internship? I can confidently say, during the interviewing process last fall, companies were impressed that I was an interdisciplinary student pursuing two degrees on an accelerated timeline—the EDDP speaks not only to a student’s dedication to school, but also to time management skills. I will be interning at Eli Lilly and Company this summer!
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? It is easier to start in EDDP and transfer out if you don’t like it than it is to transfer into it one or two years late. Take advantage of the opportunities at both universities—it doubles your chances of amazing experiences.

Energy Engineering
Lexi Gossett
Year in program and majors: 5th year; Energy Engineering and Mathematics
How did you hear about the EDDP? Looking through Butler’s website as a junior in high school
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? I chose Butler because of the small class sizes, gorgeous campus and my interest in engineering. I chose the EDDP because I knew I wanted to pursue engineering and felt like the dual-degree program would give me an edge over other schools’ programs.
What is an experience you have had here that you may not have had at another school? My internship with Butler University Operations has been incredible. I’ve been able to learn so many things, not only about engineering and sustainability, but also about the Butler campus and what I personally value as an engineer. I’m incredibly lucky to have this experience!
How well would you say the EDDP has prepared you for your internship? The EDDP had helped me with my networking skills, leadership, and my ability to tackle multiple issues at once. With my internship, I’m easily able to bounce back and forth between projects and problem solve. One minute I could be working on utility calculations and the next I could be helping organize a new project for campus.
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? My advice would be to believe in yourself. It sounds cheesy but if you want to be an engineer and be successful in this program, it’s possible. There were times where I felt like dropping out because I felt insecure about my abilities, but continued despite having those “imposter syndrome” feelings. I’m glad I continued and had the support of upperclassman to keep me focused on my goals.
Mechanical Engineering
Megan Fraider
Year in program and majors: 5th year; Mechanical Engineering and Physics
How did you hear about the EDDP? I heard about it after having already been interested in Butler for their education program.
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? I loved the Butler campus and the community! And getting two degrees in the time it could take me to get one was an added bonus.
What is an experience you have had here that you may not have had at another school? Society of Women Engineers Conference! I’ve been lucky to have been so involved with the organization.
How well would you say the EDDP has prepared you for your internship? The EDDP prepared me very well! My internship was very impressed with my presentation and organization skills. Most of these were developed through required LAS courses that aren’t mentioned in other engineering programs.
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? Definitely do your research! I never would have known just how great this program compared to others if my parents hadn’t really encouraged checking out each campus and program that I was interested in.
Matt Mewborn
Year in program and majors: 2nd year; Mechanical Engineering and Astronomy & Astrophysics
How did you hear about the EDDP? A friend and the internet
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? The competitive advantage of having dual degrees should help when applying for jobs in the future.
What is an experience you have had here that you may not have had at another school? Because of the small size of the program, the EDDP is like our own little community. Also, both universities are close to a nice downtown area that is rich with opportunities.
How well would you say the EDDP has prepared you for your internship? Insanely well, because of the liberal arts approach to learning and the variety of required classes.
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? Just do it. It’s worth it.
Emma Morton
Year in program and majors: 2nd year; Mechanical Engineering and Economics
How did you hear about the EDDP? I came across it on the Butler website when looking for schools to apply to
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? The two degrees make it unique from other engineering programs that I was looking at. I also knew I wanted to go to a smaller school, so attending Butler but earning a Purdue engineering degree seemed like the best of both worlds!
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? Stay open-minded! You might come into the program with two majors picked, but you never know if there’s another combination that you’ll like even better!
Justin Rice
Year in program and majors: 3rd year; Mechanical Engineering and Economics
How did you hear about the EDDP? I heard about the EDDP through talking to Butler at a high school fair, and then again when visiting Butler on a tour during my senior of high school. I also did some research on the program when looking at colleges.
Why did you choose Butler and the EDDP? Butler was the perfect distance from home and I liked all of the opportunities that the unique program offered. The ability to go to a small liberal arts university, but graduate with an engineering degree from a prestigious engineering university like Purdue was a win-win situation for me. Butler is the perfect combination of small-school advantages (professors, research, and class sizes) with the big-school feel of our athletics and location in Indianapolis.
What is an experience you have had here that you may not have had at another school? The athletics and men’s basketball are awesome; it’s great to be so close to the action. I also had the opportunity to play in our marching band, which isn’t something I probably would have done if I had attended another school. The intimate class sizes also provide an experience that would be difficult to find somewhere else.
What advice do you have for those considering the EDDP? If you like 1) small class sizes, 2) professors who care and are easy to talk with, and 3) fun, engaging classes 4) on a small campus that is easy to get around 5) filled with people that you’ll enjoy spending time with…consider looking into the program.
