Science, Food, and Fun – A Trip for Butler Alumni, Employees, and Their Friends and Families

Alumni, employees, and their friends and family are invited to participate in a 10-day study tour involving travel to France and Germany. Because it is a study tour, all participants will be mailed assigned readings to complete prior to the trip. Chemistry faculty from Butler University will lead the group in a morning seminar in Paris where the process and science of making beer, wine, cheese, and chocolate will be reviewed and discussed (at a level appropriate for both scientists and non-scientists). Following the science primer, the group will visit breweries, wineries, cheese production sites, and chocolatiers to gain a better understanding and appreciation of these specialized food products. Significant events have been planned during these programmed visits such as workshops, tours, and tastings where our group will have significant interactions with experts who can comment on culture, history, and science.
