Graduate Programs

To submit a graduate application, you need to have previously completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university and be seeking an advanced degree. Each program processes its own applications for admission, but the requirements below are baseline requirements for all applications for graduate admission.

Graduate Application Requirements

  • Butler Application
  • Official transcript from each college or university attended
    • Transcripts can be mailed directly from the issuing institution to Butler University or sent as an electronic transcript to gradadmission@butler.edu. The institution must be a regionally accredited college or university and the transcript must indicate the date the degree was conferred.
  • Personal statement topics vary by program (see below)
  • ​​Additional requirements set by the particular program (see below)

International applicants must additionally submit the following:

  • TOEFL scores or equivalent proof of English proficiency
  • A clear copy of your passport
  • Evidence of financial support

Master of Science in Strategic Communication

Personal Statement Topic
Please describe specifically how our Master's in Strategic Communication program in particular will help you reach your goals. We also hope you will provide any additional information that would provide context as we review all of your materials, from transcripts to work record, etc. For example, perhaps you wish to explain some inconsistencies in your undergraduate or professional career. The essay is your opportunity to make an argument for yourself. Another purpose of the essay is for us to assess the quality of your writing, so make sure that you provide a thoughtful essay that is thorough, well-organized, persuasive, and clear. 

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation (For applicants with less than 3 years professional experience in a communication-related field, at least one reference letter will ideally come from a full-time faculty member at your undergraduate institution.); résumé; GRE or GMAT (will be waived if undergraduate GPA is a 3.0 or higher); and official transcript(s).

College of Education

Experiential Program for Preparing Schools Principals (EPPSP)

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a personal statement that explains your interest in the Butler EPPSP program, and any additional information you wish to share with the Admission Committee.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation (evaluation of leadership potential by applicant's principal and one additional colleague); copy of teaching license; résumé; GRE or MAT scores (required only if undergraduate GPA is below a 3.0); and official transcript(s).

 

Master of Science in School Counseling

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a professional statement addressing how you exemplify each of the Core Values of the College of Education.

Master's in Effective Teaching and Leadership (METL)

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Submit a 1-2 page personal statement that explains your interest in the Butler Creative Writing program.

Two letters of recommendation; résumé; writing sample (prose or poetry); and official transcript(s).

 

Master of Arts in English

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a 500-word Statement of Purpose outlining your undergraduate work in English/Literary Studies (or related field), and your goals for graduate work.

College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Master of Science Physician Assistant Studies

Additional Application Requirements
Students applying to the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program need to apply directly to the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) at www.caspaonline.org. Students applying through CASPA are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If you have questions about this program, please contact PAadmission@butler.edu.
 

Doctor of Medical Science

Application Deadlines
Applicants must submit all required materials at least seven days before their preferred start date. Decisions are made on an ongoing basis

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a 250-word essay describing your goals for enrolling in the DMS program.

Additional Application Requirements
Official transcript from each college or university from which degrees were earned; updated curriculum vitae; active state license number or NCCPA certification number

 

Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Lacy School of Business

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Application Deadlines
Fall Term: January 1, February 1, March 1, April 1, May 1, June 1, July 1*, and August 1.
Spring Term: September 1, October 1, November 1, and December 1.

*International applicant final application deadline for fall term is July 1 annually.

Personal Statement
Applicants to the Butler University Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) program are required to submit a Personal Statement that describes their motivation for pursuing an MBA with the Lacy School of Business. 

The Personal Statement gives applicants the opportunity to summarize their career goals and highlight any professional or academic experiences that make them a uniquely qualified candidate. An effective personal statement portrays who the applicant is, what they’ve achieved and what skills and experiences they bring to the table. It is also used to assess effective communication and analytical skills. The Personal Statement should provide clear and compelling reasoning for their motivations and qualifications for pursuing a Butler MBA.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation; résumé; official GMAT/GRE scores; and official transcript(s).

 

Master of Professional Accounting

Master of Science in Risk and Insurance (MSRI)
