Graduate Programs

To submit a graduate application, you need to have previously completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university and be seeking an advanced degree. Each program processes its own applications for admission, but the requirements below are baseline requirements for all applications for graduate admission.

Graduate Application Requirements

  • Butler Application
  • Official transcript from each college or university attended
    • Transcripts can be mailed directly from the issuing institution to Butler University or sent as an electronic transcript to gradadmission@butler.edu. The institution must be a regionally accredited college or university and the transcript must indicate the date the degree was conferred.

Master of Science in Strategic Communication

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a personal statement that explains your interest in the Butler Strategic Communication program, and any additional information you wish to share with the Admission Committee.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation; resume; GRE or GMAT (will be waived if undergraduate GPA is a 3.0 or higher)

College of Education

Experiential Program for Preparing Schools Principals (EPPSP)

Spring

Application Deadlines
November 18

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a personal statement that explains your interest in the Butler EPPSP program, and any additional information you wish to share with the Admission Committee.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation (evaluation of leadership potential by applicant's principal and one additional colleague); copy of teaching license; resume; GRE or MAT scores (required only if undergraduate GPA is below a 3.0)

 

Master of Science in School Counseling

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a professional statement addressing how you exemplify each of the Core Values of the College of Education.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a 1-2 page personal statement that explains your interest in the Butler Creative Writing program.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation; resume; writing sample (prose or poetry). 

 

Master of Arts in English

Application Deadlines
February 15 and September 15

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a 500-word Statement of Purpose outlining your undergraduate work in English/Literary Studies (or related field), and your goals for graduate work.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation, sample critical essay; resume. 

College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Applications are accepted until start of fall semester classes.

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a brief statement indicating your specific research interests and career goals.

Master of Science Physician Assistant Studies

Additional Application Requirements
Students applying to the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program need to apply directly to the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) at www.caspaonline.org. Students applying through CASPA are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If you have questions about this program, please contact PAadmission@butler.edu.
 

Doctor of Medical Science

Application Deadlines
Application opens August 1, 2019 for spring, summer, and fall 2020 start date. Decisions are made on an ongoing basis.

Personal Statement Topic
Submit a 250-word essay describing your goals for enrolling in the DMS program.

Additional Application Requirements
Official transcript from each college or university attended; updated curriculum vita; active state license number or NCCPA certification number

Jordan College of the Arts

Master of Music
Degree Options include: Composition, Conducting/Choral Track, Conducting/Instrumental Track, Music Education, Performance, Piano Pedagogy, and a Master of Music Degree with a Double Major

Attach a brief statement outlining your career goals and how the MM degree in your chosen area will help you achieve those goals.

Master of Arts in Musicology

Attach a brief statement outlining your career goals and how the Musicology degree will help you achieve those goals.

Lacy School of Business

Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Start Dates Offered
Fall, Spring

Application Deadlines
Fall Term: January 1, February 1, March 1, April 1, May 1, June 1, July 1*, and August 1.
Spring Term: September 1, October 1, November 1, and December 1.

*International applicant final application deadline for fall term is July 1 annually.

Personal Statement
Applicants to the Butler University Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) program are required to submit a Personal Statement that describes their motivation for pursuing an MBA with the Lacy School of Business. 

The Personal Statement gives applicants the opportunity to summarize their career goals and highlight any professional or academic experiences that make them a uniquely qualified candidate. An effective personal statement portrays who the applicant is, what they’ve achieved and what skills and experiences they bring to the table. It is also used to assess effective communication and analytical skills. The Personal Statement should provide clear and compelling reasoning for their motivations and qualifications for pursing a Butler MBA.

Additional Application Requirements
Two letters of recommendation; resume; official GMAT/GRE scores; and official undergraduate transcript(s).

 

Master of Professional Accounting

Two letters of recommendation; resume; official GMAT scores (not required if undergraduate degree is from Butler; minimum score required: 30th percentile)

 

Master of Science in Risk and Insurance (MSRI)

Personal Statement
Applicants to the Butler University Master of Science in Risk & Insurance (MSRI) program are required to submit a Personal Statement that describes their motivation for pursuing the MSRI degree with the Lacy School of Business.
