You will need a laptop or desktop computer that can function reliably.<ul> <li>Many synchronous and asynchronous courses require access to audio and video creation. If your computer is not equipped with a microphone or webcam, consider purchasing one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Webcams-Under-25-Audio-Video-Accessories\/s?i=computers&amp;bbn=172511&amp;rh=n%3A172511%2Cp_36%3A1253503011%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A4001928011&amp;dc&amp;qid=1585596834&amp;rnid=2882914011&amp;ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin_1\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">these affordable options<\/a>.<\/li> <li>If you own a Chromebook and are unable to download the Panopto Recorder to your device, you must utilize another tool. CAT recommends using <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-9669-50736467895\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canvas Studio<\/a>, a recording platform that allows students to record basic videos <strong>on their cellphones and upload them<\/strong> directly to Canvas.<\/li> <li>For students who require Windows but own a Mac, consider downloading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imore.com\/how-install-windows-your-mac-boot-camp\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bootcamp<\/a>, a piece of software designed by Apple that allows students to convert their internal hard drive into one that processes both macOS and Windows.<\/li><\/ul><\/li> <li><strong>Textbooks and Academic Resources<\/strong>: Do you need access to virtual textbooks? Many publishers, libraries, and databases are offering free access to their resources.<ul> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/openlibrary.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Archive<\/a>\u00a0(Free): A resource offering a collection of books that supports emergency remote teaching, research endeavors, and scholarly activities. Because professors are expected to be regularly checking their emails during the workweek, email should be your primary point of contact with your professor. DO NOT expect responses at unreasonable hours or to be immediate. When crafting an email, do so with care. Go to zoom.butler.edu and select Join a Meeting at the top. Paste the Meeting ID into the field and you will be able to join the meeting.<\/li> <li>Join without using a video: When joining, simply select Join Without Video before entering the meeting. While you are in the safety of your own home, it is important to remember that others can still hear and see you. Dr. Thomas Plante offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/do-the-right-thing\/202003\/top-10-tips-good-zoom-hygiene-and-etiquette-in-education\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ten tips<\/a> to guide you towards good online etiquette:\u00a0<\/strong><ul> <li>Find a quiet place and be prepared to use video, as well as sound.<\/li> <li>Get prepared ahead of time and turn on video and audio.<\/li> <li>Use headphones if you have any, they make it easier for you to hear the lecture.<\/li> <li>Use your laptop or desktop computers NOT cell phone to connect (if possible).<\/li> <li>Take notes on paper to stay engaged.<\/li> <li>Mute Zoom when you are not talking.<\/li> <li>Turn off your video if you are eating, moving excessively, talking with someone else in the room, or doing anything else that might be distracting to others.<\/li> <li>Do not watch Netflix, etc. while in class. Your professor will be able to see this and will be very disappointed.<\/li> <li>Ensure there are no bright lights behind you.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li> <li><strong>Ergonomics<\/strong>: In order to ensure you are learning in an environment that is both comfortable and avoids injury, consider making ergonomic adjustments to your workspace.\u00a0 If you\u2019re still struggling, follow this <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/03\/17\/working-from-home-heres-how-to-make-your-setup-more-ergonomic\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">helpful advice<\/a> on how to set up your study space.<\/li> <li><strong>Connectivity<\/strong>:\u00a0 Do you have a high-speed internet connection at home, such as cable, DSL or fiber? Contact your local provider for more information about services, pricing, and installation.\u00a0 Alternatively,\u00a0 you may want to look into using your mobile phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Many providers such as Verizon also sell a device called a Jetpack that uses cellular connectivity to create a Wi-Fi connection for your mobile devices. Be sure to verify your data availability prior to using these options, as going over your allotment can be expensive.
