Below is an archive of CUES projects: completed, but not forgotten!<\/p>\n<div class=\"acc-flex-container\">\n\t<div class=\"acc-title-container\" role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"3\">\n\t\t<button id='block_acf-block-65aa865593d99-acc-row' class='acc-row' type='button' aria-expanded='false' aria-controls='block_acf-block-65aa865593d99_acc-content-panel'>\n\t\t\t<div id='block_acf-block-65aa865593d99-acc-title' class='acc-title'>\n\t\t\t\tIndy Food Access Research\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<img alt=\"\" id='block_acf-block-65aa865593d99-acc-img' class='acc-icon' src='https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/academic-services\/wp-content\/plugins\/butler-acf-blocks-new\/assets\/images\/nav_main_icon_open.png' \/>\n\t\t<\/button>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div role=\"region\" aria-hidden='true'\n\t\tid='block_acf-block-65aa865593d99-acc-content-panel' class='acc-panel' aria-labelledby=\"block_acf-block-65aa865593d99-acc-row\">\n\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\"><p>Urban food deserts are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a low-income census tract (defined as having a poverty rate greater than or equal to 20% or a median family income less than or equal to 80% of the area\u2019s median family income) where at least 500 people or 33% of the census tract\u2019s population reside more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store.<\/p><p>In 2014, the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/do-you-live-in-a-food-desert\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indianapolis was ranked the worst food desert in the nation<\/a> according to Walk Score. In 2018, SAVI estimated that 200,000 Indianapolis residents or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savi.org\/2018\/11\/29\/estimated-200000-indy-residents-live-in-food-deserts\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">71% of Marion County census tracts have low food access<\/a>\u00a0(purple areas on the map). There are many non-profit organizations striving to improve food insecurity in Indianapolis such as Flanner House, Kheprw Institute, Mother Love&#8217;s Garden, Lawrence Community Gardens, and Indy Urban Acres, among others. Each organization has a unique organizational structure and approach to solving this issue in Indianapolis.<\/p><p>The Indy Food Access research project at Butler University explores how the context, perspectives, goals, and characteristics of local organizations and their leadership structure influences approaches to combating food insecurity and impacts to solving challenges of food availability, access, and sovereignty. In 2014, Make Change expanded into two additional neighborhoods (Near Eastside and Fountain Square) through generous funding from SustainIndy and Smallbox in 2014. The Make Change program encouraged positive environmental behavior through incentivized community engagement. Participants chose and performed an activity from a defined list of qualifying environmental actions, reported activities through an online form, and tagged \u201c@MakeChangeIndy\u201d in activity photos posted to social media. Community currency was then mailed to participants who redeemed it at participating local businesses with sustainable business practices. The businesses were then fully reimbursed for the exchanged currency amount from grant funds.<\/p><p>In total, the program had 400 participants committing 936 hours to environmental action.
