The Purpose of Butler University's Summer Reading Program

All incoming freshmen will be reading Dave Isay's Listening Is an Act of Love in preparation for Welcome Week 2009. The primary function of the text is to establish an initial common academic experience for everyone involved in orientation. The academic orientation group meetings will help students transition into the college classroom environment and prepare them for what is to come over the next several years.

New students will be welcomed by faculty, staff, current students and community members who will serve as orientation guides for welcome week and who will be a resource throughout the college experience. All orientation guides are currently reading Listening Is an Act of Love as well, and are preparing to lead discussions based on themes in the text.

Please come to Welcome Week prepared to express your feelings about issues examined in Listening Is an Act of Love. We hope you enjoy the reading and look forward to your arrival in August!
