CUE Outreach
Center for Inquiry at School 84

On October 16th, 2008, IPS Center for Inquiry at School 84 held
its annual math + science night. The CUE participated with a booth
showcasing specimens and artifacts representative of its projects.
Students and their parents were invited to examine turtle shells,
birdhouses, tracking devices, skulls, herbarium samples and other
items indicative of local flora and fauna. An outreach package was
also available to the students to take with them.

College Mentors for Kids
College
Mentors for Kids is an innovative non-profit that pairs first-
through fourth- graders with a college student mentor on a college
campus for weekly activities focused on higher education and
career, culture and diversity and community service. The CUE is
often asked to host participants from the Butler chapter of College
Mentor for Kids program. 'Buddies' are given an introduction to the
center and the opportunity to exam books and samples. Activities
vary depending on time of year and weather constraints. Field
excursions include a walk to the canal, Butler prairie and nest box
sites to see how and where some of the research through the center
is conducted. Classroom activities have involved making bird
feeders and rainsticks.
East 10th Street United Methodist Summer Camp
In the spring of 2009 the CUE was approached by organizers from
the East 10th Street summer camp program. The summer camp is an
enrichment program to help students reinforce and maintain their
lessons from the academic year, as well as explore new lessons and
activities. CUE interns worked to develop a curriculum that is
based in the natural sciences and gets the participants outside.
The CUE also leads the garden club. The summer camp set up some
raised beds in a garden plot on site. The CUE interns work with the
students on maintaining the garden, producing artistic pieces for
the garden, and they hope to build a wormery for the garden as
well.
