CUE Activities

Butler students, in conjunction with the program manager, are in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Center and the maintenance of current activities. In keeping with our mission, the CUE sponsors activities that focus on Urban Ecology and are open to anyone in the community. Current  CUE events include:

White River Cleanup

The CUE will be sponsoring our annual Fall White River Cleanup on Saturday, October 10th, 2009. This will be a morning of satisfying work and fun as we clean the banks of  Butler's adopted stretch of the White River .  We will once again be organizing three crews and holding a lottery for spots on the canoe crew! Please contact the CUE at 940-6505 or email us to sign up. Click here to view our adopted segment. This year's clean up is sponsored in part by Chipotle!

Gardening for Life

Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, University of Delaware; author of Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens (Timber Press, 2nd ed., 2009.)  In his eye-opening book, Bringing Nature Home, Tallamy shows how life does depend on what we plant in our backyards and the important role plants play in maintaining biodiversity.

This event is FREE and open to the public. No tickets are required.

When: Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 7:30 pm (doors open 6:30 pm)

Ann Katz Festival of Books

The CUE is sponsoring a presentation at the Ann Katz Festival of Books on November 8, 2009. The presentation, entitled  "The Man Who Flies with The Birds", focuses on a book that deals with bird strikes and aircraft. The presentation will be given by the co-author of the book and there will also be a local DNR biologist, John Castrale, who will provide a local context.  For more information please visit their website .

Lunch Seminars

The spring semester kept us busy with our networking lunches and seminars.  We sponsored approximately eight networking lunches with guests from the DNR, JF New, Shrewsberry and Associates, and Green Broad Ripple.  We also had presentations from students about their summer experiences.  Check back this fall for a current schedule of upcoming lunches.

Bird Walks

The CUE sponsors monthly bird walks on campus in the spring and summer. No experience with birding is required.  A CUE student intern leads the group on a walk through the Butler woods and surrounding area.  Please bring along binoculars and field guides if you have them. Please check back for our updated schedule this spring.

Nature Walks

The CUE sponsors monthly nature walks that highlight the local flora. Participants meet at Gallahue Hall in the lower Atrium at noon on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Dr. Rebecca Dolan or a CUE student intern will lead the group on a walk to the prairie, Butler Woods and the surrounding area.

Journal Club

Please join us on the first Thursday of the month for a brown bag discussion pertaining to urban ecology. Our next Brown bag event will be held Thursday, October 1st, GH 68, at 12:30pm.Faculty and students will be discussing the attached summary article from the National Academies entitled, "A New Biology for the 21st Century" (PDF).

Abstract: Now more than ever, biology has the potential to contribute practical solutions to many of the major challenges confronting the United States and the world. This report recommends that a "New Biology" approach-one that depends on greater integration within biology, and closer collaboration with physical, computational, and earth scientists, mathematicians and engineers- be used to find solutions to four key societal needs: sustainable food production, ecosystem restoration, optimized biofuel production, and improvement in human health. The approach calls for a coordinated effort to leverage resources across the federal, private, and academic sectors to help meet challenges and improve the return on life science research in general.

Remember discussion starts at 12:30 pm. We'll provide dessert!

Movie Night

The CUE will be hosting movie nights again this fall.  Please check back for updates.
