About The CUE
The Center for Urban Ecology was founded in 2004 by faculty and staff
in the Department of Biological Sciences. They realized the need to
advance our understanding of ecological systems as they adapt and
function in an urban setting. Given the location and urban context of
the Butler Campus, it is a natural backdrop for the center, functioning
as both an outdoor classroom and research site.
Additionally, the center’s establishment coincided with the ‘Dare to
Lead’ planning process at Butler, a plan to re-affirm the mission and
commitments of the University. The center seeks to meet the ‘Dare to
Lead’ plan by providing students with invaluable experiential learning
opportunities through on-site research and community partnerships.
