Stan Schuchman is a professor emeritus and former dean, vice president, and provost of Gallaudet University, a world leader in education and career development for deaf and hard of hearing students. With Gallaudet from 1967-1999, Schuchman was honored with a "Distinguished Faculty" award (1991) and a research appointment as Schaefer Professor (1998). He continues to write, lecture, and consult as a partner in BJS Associates.

Schuchman developed techniques for videotaping oral history interviews of deaf persons who use sign language. In 1991 in Washington, D.C., he organized and chaired the first international conference on deaf history. He is a past president of Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and has edited a widely respected regional newsletter on oral history.

In 1998, Schuchman and Professor Donna F. Ryan organized a conference on the Holocaust, "Deaf People in Hitler's Europe, 1933-1945," in cooperation with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. He is co-author/editor of the anthology Deaf People in Hitler's Europe and author of Hollywood Speaks, Deafness and the Film Entertainment Industry.
