Student Profile

Andrew Wiskowski

Andrew WiskowskiWith experience lighting, stage managing and performing in mainstage productions, an internship at a local theatre company and a performing tour of Ireland, Andrew Wiskowski’s resume crams in a variety of theatre experiences. And that’s his freshman year alone.

A junior from Wausau, Wisc., Andrew was originally drawn to Butler because of its campus and location. After visiting campus, he found it to be even more appealing. “I started to recognize the fact that the Jordan College is well thought of and that John Green and the faculty he has assembled in the past five years are really impressive people,” he says. “The department offers a lot of things that most undergraduate programs don’t.”

During his first week at Butler, Andrew was asked to work on lighting for Blood Wedding. After volunteering as an usher at The Phoenix Theatre, he was asked to be an intern with the company. At Butler, he soon found himself stage managing Reverse Psychology and in the cast of The Dreaming of the Bones, which landed him a spot on a performance tour of Ireland.

“It was the best experience of my life,” he says. “The play was very technical when we did it here, but it didn’t have a soul. We really didn’t have a firm grasp of the weight of the material. When we went to Ireland, it was impossible to deny the importance of the words that we were saying. It was a defining moment for the cast, crew and directors when we finally realized what a beautiful piece we had made and how well we had learned the Irish struggle.”

At Butler, Andrew finds himself continually challenged as an actor and a student. “The theatre department here is for invested students who are not afraid to take risks and work harder than they would expect. Coming to Butler you will learn what it really means to be a performer, designer or scholar of theatre because it is intensive training on all levels. We get a lot of credit for the performing aspects, but the design and academic aspects are rigorous. It’s not theatre for the timid.”
