Student Profile
Kaleb Loosbrock
As
a Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, Kaleb Loosbrock had his choice
on where in Indiana to attend college, but he remembers well the moment
he decided Butler was the place for him. “I came to Butler on
a whim, and as I was sitting on the lawn of Robertson Hall I heard
the sounds of singing and musical instruments coming from Lilly Hall,
and
I just knew this was the right place for me.” Coming from Chalmers,
Ind., population 300, was a big step for the young man, but as he
completes his arts administration major he’s found that his decision
opened a world of possibilities.
“My experiences at Butler have been phenomenal, and with my focus
in theatre I am challenged artistically, creatively and intellectually,
and I constantly learn.” Building upon this strong foundation, Kaleb
spent the second half of his junior year in Spain and the following summer
in Wales. Those treks took his education a step further and changed his
entire outlook on the world.
“It is completely different to read and learn about something and
then to go and actually experience it — it was great to connect
mentally, physically and emotionally with the places I had read or heard
about in the past. It changed the way I think,” he says. “As
I traveled to the different countries in Europe I realized we are a global
community and we are all citizens of the world — it is not just
about ourselves in our own environment.”
While at the Center for Cross Cultural Studies in Seville, Spain, and
the European Live Arts Network (ELAN) in Wales, Kaleb formed friendships
that will stay with him. After graduation, he plans to return to Spain
to complete his master’s and eventually open a not-for-profit art
center in the United States that explores and celebrates the cultures
of the world. “I want to bring the global community to America.”
