Student Profile
Kate Joos
As
a double major in theatre and English, Kate Joos had two curriculums
to satisfy during her time abroad. Studying in Colerain, Ireland,
she was able to immerse herself in both aspects. With classes
in Victorian literature, the history of the English language and
directing, Kate was able to focus on her studies as well as in
a new culture. “I’ve always been interested in anything
Irish — the dance, music and culture,” she says. “I
wanted a place to do theatre and English and needed a place to
incorporate both.”
During her time abroad, Kate enjoyed her newfound freedom. “I had to learn
to get around on my own,” she says. “I flew to London to visit
friends and travel, and it was great to be able to be so independent.”
In addition to adjusting to Irish culture, Kate lived with students
from Ireland, Spain and Switzerland. Living with people from a variety
of cultures
allowed
her to develop a wider worldview. “I’m definitely much more
world-conscious. I’m more aware of how what we do affects the rest
of the world and how we stand as a world power.”
