Student Profile
Katrina Bergmann
Katrina
Bergmann had two requirements of the university she chose to
attend: it had to have a strong theatre department and a strong study abroad
program. At Butler she found both. “My parents and I looked
at a lot of different schools, and Butler was the one that fit
my needs,” says Katrina, who, true to her desire, took
advantage of both programs. She is a theatre major who spent
the second half
of her junior year studying at Griffith University in Australia.
“I chose Australia because I already had a strong background
in theatre at Butler and Australia is known for its films. I
liked the idea of going as far away as possible and still being
in the secure environment of a university,” says Katrina,
who took two film, one theatre and one art history course at
Griffith.
She roomed with a Korean girl and an Australian boy in an apartment
complex with other students from around the globe, and that gave
her the opportunity to live in a diverse community. “It
was just wonderful – I left a very cold Indiana and walked
off the airplane to palm trees and warm weather and the people
were so friendly,” she says. “I love the way they
speak and the slang they use.” But it was more than the
culture that enriched Katrina’s educational experience,
for her study project in Australia led to her senior theatre project
for Butler. “I believe theatre should bring about a positive
change in society and I wanted to do something that would make
people motivated to make a difference.” Her 15-minute one-woman
show on rape and sexual abuse was so well received in Australia
that she turned it into a 90-minute play called The Journey
with a cast of eight. The play was performed by Butler theatre
students in spring 2004.
After graduation she plans to hone her acting skills in theatre
and film in Chicago and then move to the warm climate of Los
Angeles and continue her acting career. “I’m excited
because I feel prepared to go out to devote myself to my craft.”
