The New Harmony Project
On Friday, Nov. 13th, 2009, Butler Theatre hosted a
free playwriting workshop offered by The New Harmony Project, one
of the country's finest new play development labs. Butler Theatre
students were joined by college students and faculty from Ball
State, Anderson, Marian, and Ivy Tech for an exciting afternoon of
workshop activities led by Paul Walsh, Artistic Director
of The New Harmony Project and professor of dramaturgy at the Yale
School of Drama and by popular playwright Ken Weitzman,
visiting professor of Playwriting at Indiana University.

Workshop Information
Story, Character and the Source of Inspiration, the
hands-on workshop explored imaginative and creative approaches to
dramatic writing for the contemporary stage. It included a
discussion of trends in contemporary playwriting as well as
specifically designed writing exercises geared to address the basic
building blocks of dramatic writing (story and character) and
source of inspiration and creativity for the young writer. The
workshop concluded with a conversation between Weitzman and Walsh
about the life of the playwright today in contemporary America and
time for workshop participants to ask questions about the
profession.
