Vinegar Tom

by Caryl Churchill
March 2005

Written in 1976, Vinegar Tom is the first play written by Churchill as the result of workshops with Monstrous Regiment, a feminist theatre company who toured the English provinces at the time, performing in non-traditional venues such as community centers and prisons.
The play deals with the witch hunts of the 17th century and shows how the authorities used non-conforming women as scapegoats in a time of social unrest. In many ways, Churchill's play can be seen as a feminist response to Arthur Miller's play IThe Crucible.
