The Taming of the Shrew
by William Shakespeare, adapted by
Diane Timmerman
December 2005
The shrewish Kate, marginalized by family and "friends",
is at her wit's end. Her father Baptista, her sister Bianca,
and all of Padua, it seems, are against her. The beautiful
Bianca cannot be wed until Kate, the older of the two, has
been married off. Bianca has scores of suitors, Kate, none.
In walks Petruchio looking to make his fortune. Marrying Kate
will win him the money he desires, and so he agrees to a bargain
with Baptista before meeting his bride. When Kate and Petruchio
do meet, the fireworks flare in one of Shakespeare's most
famous scenes. In each other they discover a fascinating version
of themselves: both possess the same passion for pushing an
argument too far, the same zeal for physically fighting what
they believe to be wrong, and ultimately the same deep understanding
of human nature in the context of a shallow society. |
