BUTLER THEATRE – SOUL SEARCHING
2007– 08 Season
Butler Theatre is dedicated to the exploration of the ever-evolving
practices of international theatre through a structured approach
to the histories, theories, techniques and processes of performance.
This season we are presenting world premieres of two original
works, the regional premiere of a long neglected Russian classic,
and a timely revival of a twentieth century masterpiece.
Our guest artists this season are New York City-based playwright
and Butler alumna Zina Camblin, whose critically acclaimed play
And Her Hair Went With Her enjoyed a successful run at the Phoenix
Theatre last season. Zina returns to Butler to lead students
in the creation of The Divinity of Women Project, which will
be directed by another Butler Theatre Alumn, Michael Bachman.
As an African-American artist, Zina will become the first guest
artist of color to work directly with Butler Theatre. This project
also marks the first time in the recent history of the department
that a devised work has been included in a mainstage season.
This season we also welcome the return of long-time collaborator
Frank Felice, noted composer and professor of music composition
in the School of Music at Butler. In the past Dr. Felice’s
music has made an exciting and vital contribution to our productions
of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Kafka’s Metamorphosis,
and he joins us this Fall to compose an original score for the
world premiere of Lamentations.
Connecting students to the community through theatre is one
of the goals of our production program, which we will continue
to develop and explore this season with the presentation of
The Divinity of Women Project at various faith communities in
and around the city; through a collaborative project with the
Indianapolis Museum of Art in the fall, and through the continuation
of our highly successful series of site-specific works, which
are devised and staged in various city locations in the spring.
Finally, do not miss out on opportunities to witness the emerging
artistic talent of our senior theatre majors as they create
performances in fulfillment of Honors Thesis and Senior Project
requirements.
Welcome to the 2007-08 Butler Theatre season.
